The Corona Police Department says a fatal shooting inside a Costco Wholesale warehouse store Friday night took place after a 32-year-old man attacked an off-duty police officer.

The department says in a statement that Kenneth French of Riverside assaulted the Los Angeles Police Department officer while he was holding his young child. The statement goes on to say that the officer fired his gun, hitting French and two of French’s relatives. The department says French was killed. The relatives are in critical conditions at hospitals.

This is the first I’ve heard that he got a concussion. Is that correct? Because if it is, it means he was even less capable of making any decisions at that moment.

Right. Last I heard, Sanchez's lawyer said that Sanchez was attacked from behind, fell to the ground and briefly passed out. How does then someone conclusively identify their attacker, determine they are still a threat, get up, not retreat and release a volley of bullets? This theory seems even more implausible for someone with a concussion.

All that happened and they also somehow managed to be 20 ft away when he fired, all in 4 seconds? Is that even possible?

Probably because the victim's parents seemed to be moving him and the group away from the shooter. The video seems to suggest that.

IMO, this isn't a cut and dried case of one man shooting three unarmed people in a brightly light public place with hundreds of shoppers. Would it be the same if the shooter was a civilian hot head? To me, the DA declining to bring charges is the equivalent of "move along, nothing to see here". We aren't even getting to the point where the perp is put in front of a judge.

The victim's parents intend to appeal to the California Attorney General. Let's see what happens there.

Exactly. Seems victims were moving away from the shooter and not advancing. And if this were a civilian, it's a safe bet the case wouldn't be the same. DA admits this was treated as an officer involved shooting when presented to the grand jury, even though the officer was not on duty. He applied a standard of "if cop reasonably believed his life was in danger even if it actually wasn't" then he gets a free pass.

I think the answer is, someone doesn't. If he didn't even see who attacked him (which presumably he wouldn't have, if attacked from behind with no provocation), how did he even know he was shooting at his attacker and not some random persons? And if he believed he was shot by an active shooter (as was presented at the grand jury) then why did he shot people who were not armed?

Today is Kenneth’s 33rd birthday. Instead of celebrating it with him and our entire family, we are having to hold a rosary, pray for his soul and visit him at his resting place at the cemetery.

That is so sad. I hope that his parents have other family members who can help them. And I hope that they are doing okay physically. Getting shot at any age is traumatic, but especially as they are older, this is really hard, with the added grief of the loss of their son.

People shouldn't be shot when shopping at Costco, by a police officer. Period. No matter what.

That's a rather broad statement. You can't think of any justifiable reason?

When shopping? No. And I'll take the liberty of making it broader. They shouldn't be shot by anyone.

Parents have another son who had to move with them to take care of them after they were shot.

There isn't enough money to compensate this family for "pain and suffering". Who could really put a "number" on this situation? And what would they do with a big payment? Go to Disneyland? Hardly.

I hope I don't get shot today shopping at Costco.

I'll agree. The question is "what is shopping"?

Well, it would appear they are no longer able to work, so presumably money would go toward their living expenses and health care bills, and persons to help them with daily tasks, as I am assuming their surviving son would want to get back to his life. They have had multiple surgeries and are facing more, so the bills have got to be huge.

Thanks for the link. I am reproducing part of a post from the FB page in the link.

“The DA presented a video that he said was not great quality and that was from a great distance away. We keep asking how the video camera directly above where this incident occurred was not working ..."

Is anyone here familiar with this particular Costco or has been there? Is there a video camera placed closer to the incident? I believe it was reported earlier than Costco employees had signed non-disclosures so they might be reluctant to come forward even if there was footage from such a camera.
