The family of missing California teenager Trinity Backus says she left home in her pajamas without shoes on Thursday, and they have not heard from her since.

The Nevada County Sheriff's Office said in a Thursday Facebook post that the 16-year-old left a residence on the 18000 block of Kentucky Ravine Road in Nevada City, California, around 10:30 p.m. PT.

She was last seen wearing pajamas and a maroon robe.

Ashley Bjorklund, Backus' aunt, said the 16-year-old "had no shoes on" and "was wearing socks pajama pants and a thin flannel [sic]" in a Thursday Facebook post.

Backus is described as 5 feet, 9 inches tall, weighing about 130 pounds. She has red hair and green eyes.

The sheriff's office has received help from a number of local law enforcement offices, as well as the Nevada County Sheriff's Search & Rescue, in its search for Backus.

On Thursday night, law enforcement officials deployed an airplane with infrared capabilities to conduct an aerial search for the teenager.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about her disappearance to contact 911 or the Nevada County Sheriff's non-emergency dispatch center at 530-265-7880.

It is! I think it might have snow on the ground there so they are probably worried about exposure.
I've never seen this before, they are not giving her last name 1st of all and secondly they deployed every agency to search for her right away (which is good but unusual). They haven't given any reason to indicate she is in danger. It's just curious.

"We're lost, sad, heartbroken … worried out of our minds," the 16-year-old's aunt, Ashley Bjorklund, told Fox News Digital.

Backus was having a sleepover with a friend at Bjorklund's home on Kentucky Ravine Road — a 12-acre property in Nevada City, California — the night she disappeared.

"She’s got a great head on her shoulders," Bjorklund said. "She grew up to be an amazing human."

Backus' friend, who was sleeping over Bjorklund's house, does not know where Backus went the night of the sleepover and initially thought adults were overreacting, according to Bjorklund.

"She thought Trinity was coming back," Bjorklund said of the 16-year-old's friend, adding that her friend didn't immediately seem to realize the "severity of the situation."

Shortly after 2pm today, search and rescue teams located Trinity, unfortunately she was deceased. Trinity was located approximately 1/2 mile north of the residence she was last seen at in a very heavily wooded river drainage area.

At this point there is nothing suspicious and her cause of death is unknown. Our coroners division will be conducting a full investigation, including an autopsy.

We have been in communication with the family and extend our deepest condolences to them as they work through this loss. We ask that you please respect their privacy.

Our deep appreciation goes to the hundreds of volunteers from agencies throughout Northern California that have assisted in this search.

Oh no, I was hoping this one would have a happy ending.

Kudos to the Nevada County Sheriff's Office, both for their aggressive response, and for keeping the public so fully-informed. Providing timely, straightforward information like they have prevents wild speculation and invasion of privacy that can be seen in so many other cases, very excellent work by their communication professionals. MOO.

May her family find peace.

It’s hard to wrap my head around them saying “there is nothing suspicious” based on what she was (and wasn’t) wearing. And also that her sleepover friend didn’t know where she’d gone.

Sincere condolences to her family.

I am remembering a case here of a teenage boy who did similar, and it was due to a rare reaction to medication. Maybe this tragedy is also due to some kind of rare medical episode?
So very sorry the world lost a young and clearly wonderful soul.

Leaving the house in a fairly remote area in those kind of temperatures would not be normal behavior, so I'm sure the autopsy will look at medical conditions/drugs (prescribed or otherwise)/or alcohol. Dressed as she was, she would not have survived long outdoors, hence the comment about "nothing suspicious" in my opinion. It's a tragedy however it happened and my heart goes out to her family as well as her friend who likely given her own young age, didn't understand the seriousness of it all.

There’s a bit more information in this article. She left the home running. So maybe she was feeling paranoid or feeling hyped up or something? So sad anyways no matter what. It seems like an accident to me.

From the article above "Before she vanished, Stanio claimed Trinity told her aunt she was heading to her boyfriend's house in Green Valley, which is roughly 10 miles away."

Running 10 miles in the cold with no shoes? Sorry LE I totally disagree that it's not suspicious and hope they keep open minds while investigating her case. It will be interesting if they find any DNA (i.e. from a rendezvous, etc., as in maybe indicating she was picked up by a vehicle?) RIP Trinity, it's so sad you are gone.

I remember my Dad hated it when I went to different friends house for sleepovers when I was young and I never understood his worries. Today I certainly do.

Saw this case in msm and apologies beforehand as LE are saying this was not suspicious; but I feel like there's some reason for concern ?
If not, I hope her family will receive the answers they need !

Respectfully, was she on any medication .... or was she frightened of someone, ran, and died from exposure ?
What would make her leave and esp. barefoot ?
It feels scary, as if she had been upset about something ?
I'd like to talk a little more to the people around her that last night, family, friends, etc.
Had she voiced any concerns ?

Rest in gentle peace, Trinity ! :(
Gone far too soon !

It sure sounds like she needed to get away fast...
Was she scared of someone?
