Family pleads for tips to find niece who disappeared eight months ago

''WINNIPEG -- The family of a Manitoba woman who disappeared eight months ago is urging anyone with information to come forward.

Melinda Lynxleg of Valley River First Nation has been missing since March 31, 2020. In those eight months, RCMP said the 41-year-old has not accessed her bank account, contacted friends or family, or been active on social media.

"Melinda is loved. She comes from a huge family and we all miss her," Betty Lynxleg, Melinda's aunt, told CTV News.''

''Betty said at one point she received a text from someone claiming they had her niece and demanded a ransom. Betty said Bernice experienced a similar situation and warned her the text was likely a scam.

"To find out it was a hoax or a scam – I don't know how people do that to people who are in hurtful situations like this," Betty said.

Melinda is described as five-foot-five and weighing 190 lbs, though RCMP believe she may have lost a significant amount of weight. She has brown hair and brown eyes.

Roblin RCMP continue to search for missing 41-year-old Melinda Lynxleg of Tootinaowaziibeeng Treaty Reserve (also known as Valley River First Nation). She has been missing since March 31, 2020, has not accessed her bank account, has had no contact with friends and family and has not been active on social media.

While trying to locate Melinda Lynxleg, RCMP officers have interviewed more than 50 people, followed up on a number of tips, and continue to liaise with partner agencies.

Melinda Lynxleg is described as 5'5”, 190 pounds (it is believed that she may have lost a significant amount of weight), with brown hair and brown eyes.

“These last 8 months have been a nightmare for our family,” said Betty Lynxleg, Melinda’s aunt. “Melinda’s six children are heart-broken that their mom isn’t home. She is loved and we all just want to know that she is okay. If anyone has seen her or has any information, please call police."

Melinda's family is now offering a $5,000 reward for credible information that leads to finding her. They have also set up a Facebook page in an effort to generate leads.

"We don't have the resources to conduct thorough ground searches or any kind of searches, we don't have the equipment, we don't have the trained personnel, we don't have the communication tools … so that commission report has many recommendations that could help our family right now," she said.

'We just want to find Melinda'
Lynxleg says she and her family get especially anxious anytime police report a body has been found somewhere in the province.

"You're just on, you know, pins and needles when you hear a body's been found or, you know, a missing person has been located and you're just waiting for that phone call," she said. "It's the hardest is on her parents and her siblings … they try to keep that away from [her children]."

She says she couldn't say whether her niece is still alive.

"We just want to find Melinda," said Lynxleg. "So please come forward with information, and if they feel more comfortable to go through the tip line with the police, they can do that. ''

"I just encourage anybody that knows anything, any tiny little piece of information that they might have seen Melinda crossing the street."

But Lynxleg was reportedly spotted in Winnipeg on May 15 on William Avenue near Sherbrook Street, which would be near the Health Sciences Centre.

RCMP believe an Indigenous woman from western Manitoba who hasn't been seen for more than three years is likely dead, and that her disappearance was a homicide.

Melinda Lynxleg, 41, was last seen at the beginning of April 2020 at Tootinaowaziibeeng First Nation, also known as Valley River First Nation, about 60 kilometres west of Dauphin.

Police have new information about an abandoned residence in San Clara, about 45 kilometres northwest of Tootinaowaziibeeng near the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border, that may be connected to Lynxleg's disappearance, RCMP said in a news release.

A large police presence is expected in the area Tuesday as officers investigate.

''During a Friday media conference in Winnipeg, RCMP Sgt. Laura LeDrew, a Manitoba RCMP Major Crime Services investigator, confirmed that police have discovered the remains of Melinda Lynxleg, after conducting a search in and around an abandoned home in the community of San Clara, located about 40 kilometres north of Roblin.

“The RCMP does not give up on missing people, more than three years of searching, conducting interviews, collecting evidence,” LeDrew said. “We never stopped.”
