''Family have taken to social media in hopes the public can help locate a missing Port Alberni woman who they say may be in danger.

RCMP have confirmed a missing person report has been made for Amber Manthorne, who has not been seen or heard from since July 6th. She was reported missing to Port Alberni RCMP on Thursday July 8th.

In addition, RCMP are asking people to keep an eye out for her or her vehicle, a white 2021 Jeep Compass with BC licence plate MA145M

Manthorne is described as standing 5’1″ tall with a slim build. She has blonde hair and may be with a man known to her. A specific age was not released but both are believed to be about 40 years of old.

According to friends and family, her last GPS location was in the Cameron Lake area. Family described the situation as “serious” and said they believe she is with her former boyfriend, Justin Hall.

A close friend of Manthorne said the couple had recently broken up. When she failed to show up for work, her friends became concerned.

While unconfirmed, it’s been said that Manthorne’s residence is now behind police tape and her bed was found covered in blood

Victoria Buzz has reached out to RCMP to corroborate this information.

“It is out of character for Amber to be out of touch with family and friends for this long,” Const. Richard Johns said in a statement.

If anyone has seen Manthorne or her vehicle, call the Port Alberni RCMP at 250-723-2424.''

Port Alberni woman’s car found in Nanaimo, but woman is still missing

"A Port Alberni woman is still missing even though RCMP in Nanaimo have located her vehicle.

Port Alberni RCMP received word on Friday, July 8, 2022 that Amber Manthorne had not been seen or heard from by friends and family since Wednesday, July 6. They put out a public request for people to watch out for Manthorne or her vehicle, a white 2021 Jeep Compass with BC licence plates.

Manthorne’s vehicle was located south of Nanaimo on July 9, Port Alberni RCMP Const. Rick Johns said. Manthorne, however, was not with her vehicle. “We are still looking for Amber, we are still following the evidence, and tips that we receive from the public,” Johns said.

“Investigators have been working around the clock to find her.”

Officers have secured Manthorne’s residence and her vehicle, and are asking the public to keep an eye out for Manthorne. She is 155 centimetres (five feet one inch) tall, slim with blond hair, in her 40s according to friends, and may be with a male known to her. The RCMP declined to name the male.

Johns dispelled a rumour circulating on Saturday that a body was found on Smith Road near McLean Mill. He said no body was found, the rumour was false.

“We ask that the public continue to keep an eye out for Amber…It is out of character for her to be out of touch with family and friends for this long.”

Anyone with information on Manthorne’s whereabouts is asked to call Port Alberni RCMP at 250-723-2424.

Friends and family of Manthorne have organized a gathering at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 10 at the Tseshaht Market on Pacific Rim Highway west of Port Alberni. Anyone wishing to come and lend their support to those missing Manthorne are asked to keep parking spots in front of the market free for customers."

Cameron Lake, where her phone last pinged, is on the Alberni Highway which would be taken to get to/from Nanaimo.

Service can be spotty (or non-existent) coming into Whiskey Creek/Coombs, depending on your provider. It picks back up again once you're on the 19.

I'm not seeing anything confirming the bed thing but here are some updates added to the Victoria Buzz article already posted.

UPDATE: Victoria Buzz is being told the SUV was located Saturday, south of Nanaimo in Cassidy. The vehicle was parked off of a street, hidden in a forested area.

Second update:

RCMP have confirmed Amber’s Jeep has been located south of Nanaimo after someone driving by spotted the vehicle.

The vehicle being hidden in a forested area doesn't sound good.

When I first heard the vehicle was found in Cassidy, I hoped it was around Cassidy Country Kitchen - just off the highway, literally on the highway. Her vehicle was found on a gravel road and parked in the bushes which finds me feeling unsettled.

You have to drive up Spruston Road a little bit and then take the left on the McGillvray, which looks more like a service road than anything. It's not just a quick turn off the highway or somewhere you park when the normal Nanaimo River parking lot is at capacity.

I'm so hopeful that she is safe. I really am. She has a great and strong community behind her as well as devoted friends. It would be helpful if the RCMP would issue a statement to correct the timeline as the media has been releasing so many different statements, some of which are rumours <modsnip: If it's rumor, don't mention it.>

''She has lots of friends that she’s very closely in contact with on a daily basis,” St. Claire said in an interview with CHEK News.

“She’s involved in a wedding party right now and arranging for that. So she’s in close contact on a regular basis with all of her friends and so none of those people have heard it all from her and they’re concerned.”

RCMP say she may be with her ex-boyfriend Justin Hall.''

''Friends tell CHEK News she was last in contact with friends and family on July 7. Her phone was pinged on July 8 in Port Alberni.''

We’re just asking that everyone please take a long hard look at all these photographs,” St. Claire said.

“Just give it some thought for a moment and go back in your mind and if anyone can recall or has dashcam footage between Friday around supper time till about even Saturday at lunch from the last few days in and around, leaving Port Alberni going down towards Nanaimo, even any of the back roads.”

''There have been “armies” of people searching the backroads in the Alberni Valley for any sign of Manthorne, said St. Claire. Volunteer search and rescue teams from Cowichan, Ladysmith and elsewhere have been searching for any sign of Manthorne around the area where her car was found, south of Nanaimo. Trackers were brought in over the weekend and more are attending the area as of Monday, July 11.

“People don’t know what to do,” she added. “They’re frozen, they’re paralyzed with stress and fear and trauma, or they’re angry. We love her and we’re not giving up.”

Representatives from both Hupacasath and Tseshaht First Nation attended the gathering on Sunday evening. Tseshaht drummers performed a prayer song for Manthorne and offered their assistance and support in the search for her.

Ken Watts, elected Chief Councillor for Tseshaht First Nation, said Manthorne, who lived in the area, was a frequent customer at Tseshaht Market.
“She had a deep connection to this store, this staff loved seeing her,” said Watts. “We’re staying positive that we’ll get to see her again, laughing and smiling.”

''A Facebook group called “Finding amber” was created on Sunday, with the goal of sharing information about the search for Manthorne. As of Monday morning, the group had almost 3,000 members.

Anyone with information on Manthorne’s whereabouts is asked to call Port Alberni RCMP at 250-723-2424.''

''NANAIMO — Mounties in multiple Island jurisdictions are continuing the search for a woman missing for almost a week.
The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit have assumed control of the investigation into Amber Manthorne’s disappearance. The case began as a missing person file in Port Alberni before expanding to Nanaimo where her vehicle was discovered.
BC RCMP spokesperson S/Sgt. Janelle Shoihet said it doesn’t necessarily mean something serious has happened to Manthorne.
“We understand that it may be concerning to hear that the VIIMCU has been called to assist, however, we want to assure the community that this is not unusual, in cases where a person’s disappearance is out of character and criminality can not be immediately ruled out,” Shoihet said in a statement.''

''Police also said a man that was originally thought to be with Manthorne—an ex-boyfriend—has been located, and police no longer believe that Manthorne is with him. No other information about the man was released.''

''The RCMP continues to work with search and rescue teams to search viable sites as they are identified, such as the one south of Nanaimo where her vehicle was discovered''

The search for Amber continues – VIIMCU engaged

Port Alberni

File # 2022-6674

The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) has now been called to assist the Port Alberni RCMP in Amber Manthorne’s disappearance.

We understand that it may be concerning to hear that the VIIMCU has been called to assist, however we want to assure the community that this is not unusual, in cases where a person’s disappearance is out of character and criminality can not be immediately ruled out, states Inspector Kevin O’Donnell, Officer in Charge of VIIMCU. If criminality is ruled out the Port Alberni RCMP will again become the primary investigating agency.

VIIMCU Investigators are in Port Alberni following up on tips/information, conducting interviews and gathering surveillance and other video, and completing other investigative tasks in an effort to advance the investigation.

Earlier this week, Port Alberni RCMP issued a news release stating that Amber may be in the company of a man, that man has since been located and police no longer believe that Amber is with him.

RCMP will continue to work with Search and Rescue teams to search viable sites as they are identified, such as the one south of Nanaimo where her vehicle was discovered.

Investigators have determined Amber was last seen on Thursday July 7, and continue to appeal for any information related to her disappearance.

If you have information and have not already spoken with police, you are asked to contact the Port Alberni RCMP at 250-723-2424.

I hope there are answers soon. Nothing feels right about this. However as is normal, RCMP will not release all known facts and evidence to the public and family/friends are being cautious of this as well but also vigilant in responding to questions to address/clear up any rumours. Once again, she has a very strong group of friends (and family) behind her, fighting for her.

The Jeep location is confusing to me, too. Especially since that area is so random. Pulling off onto Spruston itself is not really a common turn-off for tourists or locals unless you're familiar with it and McGillivray Way is a gravel road. That area, aside from the smaller population that lives out that way, is mostly logging/industrial vehicles or off-roading vehicles/hunters.

Not to mention the implication that if <modsnip> had anything to do with Amber's disappearance (or at least the dumping of her Jeep), he'd have to have gotten a ride back from Cassidy.

Is this an area where one can get an Uber? If not, it's either hitchhiking, or a potential accomplice.. Just spit balling here.

Nope - no Uber or Lyft in that area. It's close to the airport, which would be easier to get a cab from.

There are two buses that run infrequently to either Nanaimo or the Cowichan area (Nanaimo Airport Transport | Airport Shuttles and Other Transportation) from the airport. You'd have to walk about 25-30 minutes from where Amber's car was left to the airport to get the bus.
