Ottawa is bewildered at how it could all go so wrong, so fast. Confused, too, by what the goal of the protest is, or whether it even has one.
They want “freedom,” all the signs say. Fine, who doesn’t? They want to replace the House of Commons with a citizens’ committee. They want fewer restrictions on cross-border trucking, which sounds reasonable — until they march around with swastikas.
Most of what they do just makes everyone angry: The flags, dancing on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier for a souvenir video, harassing the Shepherds of Good Hope mission into giving them free food that otherwise would have fed a hungry guy on the street.''
