[h=1]Police say death of man who fell down garbage chute from 9th floor is 'suspicious'[/h][h=2]Fire crews extricated the man from the garbage chute system above the compactor[/h]CBC News · Posted: Mar 28, 2018
The man is believed to be in his 30s.

Acting Staff Sgt. Chazz Stern, of Toronto police's 53 Division, said police received a call about unknown trouble in the building on Erskine Avenue, near Eglinton Avenue East and Mount Pleasant Road, at about 10 p.m.

"We're still investigating, but we're treating it as a suspicious death," Stern said Wednesday.
The man was located above the area where the garbage is compacted. He said it was "difficult" situation because it was a confined space.

"That's a fairly complicated operation for us," Pegg said Wednesday.
"They dissembled what needed to be taken apart. And ultimately, they were able to access the patient. Then from there, it becomes the responsibility of police and paramedics."

He must have live there or visiting someone. Usually the garbage shoot are rather small. I'm not sure how someone would fit in there or why you would want to?!

“I heard the guy crying it was his brother,” he said. “Whoever was there, the investigators were consoling him. I heard commotion in the hallway. There was an announcement on the intercom, saying not to use the garbage chute.”
Savion said the chute measures around a foot-and-a-half or so and is “narrow.”

Apartment 906 as well as the garbage chute door remained sealed with police tape Wednesday. The garbage chute doors on other floors were wedged shut with screws.
Another resident named John Beardsmore alleges a person would have to be small in stature to fall through the chute. “You put a garbage bag in there and it fills up the whole spot,” he said. “It’s probably an accident. You’d have to hold somebody to get them down. It’s just weird.”
“I’ve heard of children (falling down chutes), but not adults,” he said. “Foul play is not involved, we believe.”

Man who fell down garbage chute died of blunt impact trauma: Toronto police

Toronto police have revealed the results of a post-mortem exam in the case of a man found dead last week after falling nine storeys down a garbage chute.

Toronto police say that the victim died of blunt impact trauma, suggesting he didn’t meet with foul play.

“The injuries are consistent with having traversed the garbage chute,” Const. Jenifferjit Sidhu told Global News via email.

What an unusual way to die and a tragic one. There was one in my gran’s apartment building I always wondered what it was like as a child. The opening was 1/2 up the wall and no way an adult would fit in.

TN Firefighters Free Woman Stuck in Garbage Chute

A Knoxville woman fell to the bottom of a garbage chute while reaching for something Wednesday night.

January 4, 2018
Knoxville firefighters freed a woman who became stuck at the bottom of a garbage chute at a student apartment complex on Wednesday night.
Firefighters on the scene said they rescued the woman, who apparently slipped and fell down the chute while reaching for something.

She wasn't hurt, but "she'll need a shower," one firefighter quipped.
This one is really tragic. Lengthy story.

Phoebe Handsjuk was 24. Complex and beautiful. She lived 12 storeys above with her boyfriend Antony Hampel, a son of Melbourne's legal establishment.

But on that night, Phoebe died the most horrific death.

She had plunged 40 metres, feet first, down the garbage chute.

She survived the fall. But the garbage compactor at the bottom had virtually severed her right foot. Phoebe bled out in the dark, alone, her jeans around her knees.

But how did she get into the chute? And why?
The Coroner decided she had climbed in herself. He recorded death by misadventure. But there were no fingerprints at the top, and no CCTV footage. Her family doubts the Coroner's version was even physically possible.

The mystery remains.

Good grief, maybe garbage chutes should be equipped with danger signs, imo.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Authorities say a 26-year-old man is in critical condition after falling 21 floors in the garbage chute of an apartment building in upstate New York after robbing a bank.

Police in Syracuse say Robin Gutheridge robbed a Chase Bank branch Thursday and fled on foot. Detectives learned he was seen entering an apartment building a few blocks away.

While officers searched the building, a maintenance worker told them he could hear someone calling for help from a garbage chute in the basement. Police say Gutheridge was found trapped near a compactor, with some of the bank's money with him.

Officers say they believe he had climbed into the chute on the 21st floor and fell to the basement

BRIDGEPORT — Getting trapped in a garbage chute was a nightmare-come-true Thursday morning for a man at the Greene Homes apartment complex.

When city firefighters arrived at Building 4 of the complex, a resident told them the man was stuck in the garbage chute between the third and fourth floors.
Last July, firefighters in Washington, D.C., pulled a man out of the trash chute of his apartment building after he lunged after his cell phone. Evidently he found his phone, because he used it to call for help.

And in January 2016, a man fell down a trash chute of a building in Chicago trying to grab his keys. Firefighters got him out in about 10 minutes.

Most are, in my experience

Maybe they could be made/retrofitted with smaller openings so it’s physically impossible for anyone to fit inside them. Or better yet, require them to be sealed up altogether? Most us don’t get enough physical exercise anyway, so a trip down to the garbage room every few days wouldn’t do us any harm. Might have the added benefit of helping the environment too. Refuse, reuse, recycle.

My. Just falling down a garbage chute is suspicious. This poor man. What a way to go.
