Sentencing hearing for Toronto man who killed wife, stuffed body in suitcase
"A Toronto man who killed his wife, stuffed her body in a suitcase and dumped it in a river is scheduled to have a sentencing hearing today."
"A second-degree murder conviction carries a sentence of life in prison with no chance of parole for 10 to 25 years."

Family and friends are expected to provide victim impact statements at today’s hearing.

Does anyone recall WHY he was allowed to plea to second degree murder? I just remember the look of disappointment on her mothers face. He set out to kill her, why 2nd degree!

This guy deserves the rope IMO

ETA: according to CP24 its because he 'saved us from a trial'. was able to plea it down. now, I recall.

Because the Canadian justice system cares more about guilty pleas than it does victims. The crown pushes and pushes victims to accept lesser pleas, and will do anything it takes to get them.

Our system is a complete joke. Look at the case of John Schneeberger who got 4 FRIGGIN YEARS for what he did.

This guy gets double time served so he will really only serve 9 years, if that.

Neurosurgeon who killed physician wife sentenced to life, parole eligibility in 14 years

"The mother of a woman murdered by her husband after filing for divorce says her daughter endured more than a decade of domestic abuse at the hands of her spouse.

Ana Fric says Mohammed Shamji had physically and sexually assaulted her daughter, Elana Fric Shamji, and also had extra marital affairs.

Fric says she learned of the abuse after the birth of the couple's first grandchild, when her daughter told her Shamji had assaulted her, threatened her life and the life of her baby."
Fric, who revealed the details of the volatile marriage outside court after the sentence, says she hopes her daughter's story will help other women in similar circumstances.

“I very much want to talk about Elana as to keep her memory alive but also want to talk about the domestic violence that she endured for 12 years before she died in the hope that other women in circumstances will realize that unless they have the courage to leave their partners at the early stage, they could suffer the same fate as Elana,” Fric said."

WARMINGTON: Killer doc stole their mom, left 3 kids a penny
"Seems in his quest to negotiate a second-degree murder plea arrangement that would see a shot at parole 11.5 years from now, Shamji needed money for his lawyers.

Outside the court Thursday, and in later interviews, Ana said her daughter’s killer was “still controlling the finances from inside jail.”

"The Windsor woman said she was able to find her daughter’s bank account but was surprised by the balance.

“Elana had just $239 in her account,” said Ana, who thought there would be more money because she was after all “a doctor.”

"She was pleasantly surprised to find, through a forensic search, an account set up by the Shamji family in the kids’ names."

"So how much was put into the account for Yasmin, 14, Faiza, 10 and Marius, 5, who don’t have their mom this Mother’s Day?

“You are not going to believe it,” Ana said. “One penny.”

"She said her Croatian community has stepped up to help with both the kids and the legacy of their mother. So they don’t feel a need to appeal for money.

“The kids are going to be okay,” said Ana."

Dr. Elana Fric was a family doctor and mother of three who was killed in 2016 by her husband. (Twitter)
"Dr. Susan Thouin didn't know Elana Fric personally, but her female doctors choral group has organized a benefit concert for Fric's children Monday night in Toronto.

Thouinsaid Fric's death affected the entire medical community across Canada. The family doctor and mother of three was killed in 2016 by her husband.

"It was just such a shocking tragedy," said Thouin. "We talked about it quite a bit at the time ... I think it has made us more aware of the issue of violence against women."

Wanting to do something in Fric's honour, Thouin and her other colleagues organized the concert, called 'Soul Medicine.'

"We wanted to be able to give something back," said Thouin. "We're very happy we can raise some money to support her family in the Windsor area."

Fric's sister Caroline Lekic thought the concert was a great idea when she heard about it.

"It's a great way to honour Elana," said Lekic. "Some of them knew her ... three years have gone and it's nice that her memory is still kept alive."

Detective who solved murder of Ontario doctor says killer made big mistake trying to hide his crime
''TORONTO -- The lead detective on the horrific murder of an Ontario doctor says the killer made one big mistake when trying to cover up the crime, leaving investigators a calling card that led them straight to his door.

The homicide officer who solved the Doctor Elana Fric-Shamji murder wonders if the well-respected family doctor would still be alive today if friends and colleagues had spoken up about the domestic abuse in the Toronto home.

"All of her friends, all doctors, highly-educated successful people at the height of their careers as well, they knew or suspected that she was being physically abused by her husband and said nothing," Steve Ryan, now a crime analyst at CP24, said in this week’s episode of CTV News Toronto’s podcast The Detective.''

''Neither were happy in the marriage and both were having affairs — Fric-Shamji with a fellow doctor.

Ryan says after her murder, the detective had to contact the doctor and his wife, who knew nothing about the affair.''

“You’d be surprised by how a body can bend and twist. This suitcase, this woman was put into, was not that big, but he managed.”
In his haste to get rid of his wife’s body, the neurosurgeon made a big mistake and left investigators a calling card.

“Her name, believe it or not, was on the suitcase and her address was on the suitcase. Again that goes back to the panic that he was in. He clearly thought none of this through because everything he touched was a clue for us. He left his wife’s dead body in a suitcase with her name and address on.”
