'A 15-year-old girl was set on fire in an assault at Saskatoon's Evan Hardy Collegiate Thursday afternoon, police say.

According to police, emergency calls were received around 12:30 p.m. reporting an assault and a fire at the school.

A School Resource Officer (SRO) who was already present on the scene for a different matter was able to take the suspect, a 14-year-old girl, into custody immediately, police said in a news release.

The victim was transported to hospital with serious injuries, and police say a teacher was injured trying to intervene.'

''Kane said it's also been difficult on the officer and others who responded.
"The mood in our office is quite low," he said. "This is not something we ever expected."

On Thursday afternoon, Evan Hardy Collegiate sent a letter to parents saying there would be no class on Friday and a scheduled football game was cancelled. Students will be permitted to pick up any belongings and officials hope to resume regular classes as soon as possible, the letter says''.

'Warning: this story contains distressing details.

The 14-year-old girl accused of seriously injuring a 15-year-old classmate by lighting her on fire at Evan Hardy Collegiate in Saskatoon has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and arson.

The accused, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, wept throughout her brief appearance in Saskatoon provincial court on Friday morning. Judge Doug Agnew had ordered she attend in person so that he could see the teen, who wore a hoodie, before remanding her into custody until her next appearance on Sept. 11.'

''Hubbard said she saw one girl pour liquid from a black container onto another girl and lift a hand toward the other girl's head, then saw the victim on fire in the hallway. Neither student saw what was used to ignite the fire''.

''Teachers were yelling for the victim to roll on the ground to help extinguish the fire and also used fire extinguishers as the flames spread to part of a nearby wall, the two students said. The fire alarm went off as well, they added.''

''The teen’s family asked people to wear purple on Tuesday as a show of support when classes resumed for a shortened day at Evan Hardy Collegiate, where last Thursday a 14-year-old girl is alleged to have attacked the 15-year-old by setting her on fire.

“(Purple) is her favourite colour,” the girl’s grandmother said in an interview.

“It’s going to be a very long recovery, and we’ve put it out there just to let her know that people are thinking of her and praying for her.”
