He's going to get 2 x 2nd degree murder charges. I don't think they will go for 1st degree even for Aliyah. Police would have to prove that he planned both or either murder beforehand. That can be difficult to prove after the fact, especially with no surviving witnesses. Let's hope he gets 1st though.
I guess they ultimately need to lay charges that will result in a conviction--even if they're fairly certain it's first degree murder x 2. Must be awful to know ALL the terrible details and have to do that.

Highly unlikely that he would be deported. There was a case where a man was already slated to be deported, then murdered someone and was sentanced to prison in Canada where he remains. CPS won't hand this guy over to the UK... he's a permanent resident, tax payer that killed two people in Canada. It would have to be Canada's burden to keep him here unfortunately.

Let's watch his purp walk to feel better about it a little tiny bit:
Double murder suspect escorted into arrest processing unit

Head shaved. Beard gone. NCR plea coming?

The fundraiser for the funeral is pledging any extra funds to be donated to a women's shelter. If Jasmine and Aliyah spent time in a shelter for domestic abuse after living with the PS, this information would definitely be helpful toward building a case of first-degree murder. Investigators will continue compiling evidence right up until the trial. This will go to a federal court, Queen's Bench, because of the gravity of the charges. This qualifies as "only the most serious" criminal offences, I'd say.

It will be excluded from any possibility of Mental Health Court, even if he does plead NCR eventually. Murder and domestic abuse do not qualify.

It is possible that the PS made previous threats to harm them. It is possible that Jasmine called a hotline or confided in someone. It is possible that the PS shot his mouth off in a bar or at work. All theoretical at this point.

started, charges still pending in double homicide

When his ex-wife fled the marriage, she went to a shelter but was turned away. She stayed in a hotel until she could find a safe place to live. That information was in an affidavit discussed in a linked news release a few days ago.

This is a screen shot, but unfortunately I no longer have the link handy. Her family may be looking to support women's shelters because there appears to be a need for more services.

I hope his ex wife and son can find some peace at least, knowing he's off the streets. It's a shame she didn't receive the help she was seeking from a dangerous situation when she needed it. Obvious now it's known exactly how dangerous. Too bad Jasmine wasn't able to get away from him, and her poor little daughter as well. :(

Looking at other recent convictions of other people in Canada, I notice a trend toward 2nd degree murder charges where the victim and the accused were involved in some type of domestic, family interconnected relationship and 1st degree more so when there is no direct association with the victim (Saretzky, Garland).

For example this recent 2nd degree murder trial in Surrey could easily be construed to be 1st degree, but that charge was never applied -

Saretsky and Garland both committed B&Es at the time of the murders, which automatically stepped up the charges to first degree. Not a lawyer, but I think that's how it worked.

It seems that each time there is another domestic violence murder, there is temporary increased awareness of a shortage of services. That is quickly forgotten except by those who are directly impacted.

What is apparent with these murders is that there is either a problem with information about available services, or the services are not available. A 25 year old single mother with a 1 year old child should not have been in a situation where she moved from one abusive relationship to another, and ultimately murdered.

An important first step towards change must be to de-stigmatize victims of domestic violence. There is a general assumption that domestic abuse victims have a choice to leave the relationship, are typically low income, with little education and somehow responsible for their situation. In reality, some of them are women like Jasmine who was struggling to get on her feet while caring for an infant. My impression is that she was one sleep away from living on the street for too long, and that she needed someone to offer a helping hand so she could thrive. Maybe it's time to revamp the whole Women's Shelter concept to include victims who need help before they have black eyes and broken bones.

I wonder if the police response to the missing persons report filed by Jasmine's family was in response to the previous report by a neighbor of a police car seen at the residence in 2018. According to the PS, tactical police were pounding on his door in the night. He had guns. Had they been there before for domestic abuse related to Jasmine and Aliyah?

Leeming was first detained for questioning at 11AM on Thursday April 25. He was handcuffed in the front yard. His initial response was to flee but police had blocked his garage. Guns were on him when he got out of his vehicle.

There have been no reports of domestic violence other than his wife's affidavits, where she alleges psychological abuse, stalking, and trauma through harming the family dog.

Jasmine had previously requested police assistance in relation to the father of her child.

This is the timeline so far, please feel free to update and correct:

April 16-18 - police ask for sighting of man alone or with either one of the victims in Priddis, Bragg Creek, or Route 66 areas, may be carrying mulch
April 16 - 20 Police ask for information about 2014 Mercedes SUV in East Kananaskis and Bragg Creek areas

April 18 - Police ask for more information about Leeming in Bragg Creek area from 2:30 - 4:30 driving 2014 Mercedes SUV

April 18 - Leeming on date with new girlfriend

April 23 - Jasmine misses family dinner, reported missing to police

April 25 - Leeming fired this Thursday morning
April 25 - 11 AM Leeming detained for questioning, tried to make a run for it
April 26 - Interview 1: around 5:30PM, Leeming said he last saw them on April 18. Interview 2: three hours later, he said he last saw them both on April 16 and 17.

May 6 - 4AM bodies found on Hwy 40 near Grizzly Creek, 100 meters from road
May 6 - Leeming detained for questioning
May 7 - Leeming charged with murder

Yeah it's very tricky to get 1st degree to stick, again because you have to prove beyond doubt that the accused pre-meditated the murder, plotted it out and went through with it. Even if it's obvious that it was a planned attack, if you can't prove it in court, then 1st degree won't stick and there's a chance charges get dropped or re-filed. If you don't have physical evidence showing pre-meditation 2nd degree is the best you can hope for and in cases like Leeming you can still see life in prison without parole for many many years.
In terms of sentencing/parole, that fact that one victim was a child will seal his fate. For eg, a judge can make the sentences consecutive.

I think crown prosecutors are super careful, because there's been successful court challenges of convictions under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, arguing that there wasn't adequate presumption of innocence.

Still, it's a relief that they were able to find their remains and arrest the killer, I wish Jasmine and Aliyah'd had more people as solidly on their side as the CPS are.

It would be interesting to see his version of events, which is very confusing, compared side by side to the police version of events. What I've taken away from this so far is that he is *somewhat* confused about how things went down and when. We know already that the neighbors saw things quite differently than he did -- attempting to drive away vs. arranging tools.

I'm sure the knowledge of guns in the residence affected how police arrested him. Was there really a tac team there?

Here's some more info on the ex-wife and some of the history there:
Estranged wife of Brit double murder suspect says he terrified her

Reallllllly good read here, shows a lot of what he did in the past, like leaving their son in a vehicle in the freezing cold and leaving him home alone as a baby when he went to pick up his parents. Jesus, the signs were there. Read that article.

Yes ASERT was on-site to arrest him the first time, but don't know about yesterday.

Domestic abuse is so complicated.

Jasmine's family, according to the PS in the extended interview above, left a note on the door. They also reported her missing. I believe she had people on her side. I don't see how they could have known RL's history.

Here's some interview footage I didn't see before:

Not sure where it comes from, but there is quite a bit that wasn't included in the released version.

Yes you’re right there’s far much more information in that longer raw video of RL interviewed by reporters than I’ve ever noticed linked in media reports. .

Interesting, if I got that right he casually mentions something about a note left on the door “but he didn’t see it”, after he last saw the two on the 18th. He claims he thought she was spending Easter with her sister. All the chuckling going on between the reporters and him - an really outstanding job by that media team to keep him at ease and engaged. It’s very evident he was absolutely thrilled over the focus of their attention throughout.

I'm confused as to how he had time (and the tenacity) to go on a date April 18. There are psychological disorders that would describe his behavior accurately. JMO
