Police to provide update on fatal shooting of 22-year-old OCAD student
December 19, 2019
"Police will hold a press conference this morning to provide an update on their investigation into the fatal shooting of a 22-year-old college student last week.

Jeremy Vincent Urbina, 22, was shot in the parking lot of a housing complex near Finch Avenue and Leslie Street at around 8 p.m. on Dec. 11.
He was pronounced dead on scene.

Urbina's family have previously told CTV News Toronto that the OCAD student had been studying for an exam earlier in the evening but had decided to go to the supermarket across the street to get food for himself and his mother."

"The victim has been identified as Jeremy Vincent Urbina, a student at the Ontario College of Art and Design University."

"When Urbina didn't return home after more than 45 minutes, his mother, who did not want to be identified, said she started to feel worried and started calling and texting him.

A little while later, a police officer showed up at her door.

"[He] told me my son is dead, just like that," Urbina's mother told CTV News Toronto. "I can't believe it. I'm still in denial. I'm numb."

Urbina, the youngest of three brothers, was a second-year integrated media student at the university. His family said he loved the arts and theatre.

"He had this very vibrant energy," Urbina's sister-in-law, Tarah Hamilton, said. "He was always very relaxed, didn't take himself too seriously and just wanted people to be happy and be okay."

The family said they believe he was an innocent victim and that they are struggling to understand why anyone would want to harm him."
While his family said nothing can bring Urbina back, they are pleading for help in identifying the suspects. "

"We just want to feel like we can exist in this community, and in this space, without being paranoid that at the wrong moment someone can just come up to you and take your life," Hamilton said.
"It's just not fair."

A 22-year-old OCAD student was just taking some trash out on a cold December evening when a masked suspects shot him numerous times from behind, a killing a veteran homicide detective said Thursday is among one of the most monstrous he’s ever dealt with.

Just after 8 p.m. on Dec. 11, Jeremy Vincent Urbina, an integrated media student at the downtown university, was putting on winter clothes to trudge out to the dumpster near his home in the Sparroway Complex, near Finch Avenue East and Leslie Street.

Det.-Sgt. Terry Browne said that at the same time, two masked males clad in black were wandering through the common areas of Urbina’s complex, on what he believes was a deadly hunt for anyone in their way."
"Police were called by 8:08 p.m. and when they arrived, they found Urbina suffering from gunshot wounds in the “double digits.”

The two suspects, one sporting a pink mask over the lower portion of his face, appeared to flee the scene on foot in an unknown direction."

"Toronto’s bloodiest year for gun violence is coming to a close.

It started early on Jan. 1, 2019, when a man was shot at Oakwood Avenue and Vaughan Road. He was rushed to a trauma centre and survived.

And the violence continued until the last day of the year, with a double shooting near Jane Street and Finch Avenue West in the early hours of New Year’s Eve, and another man shot and killed in the evening. The two victims of the first shooting, both men, were rushed to hospital in serious condition. The victim of the second died in hospital after being shot in Scarborough at Neilson Road and Crow Trail, near Finch Avenue East.

As of 9 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, 292 people had been killed or injured in shootings in the city, 56 more than the previous year, which itself set a record for the most people shot in police data that goes back 15 years."
