Man dead, woman in critical condition after shooting in Toronto's Summerhill neighbourhood
''TORONTO -- A man is dead, and a woman is in critical condition after a shooting in the city’s Summerhill neighbourhood Friday evening.

Toronto police said they received several calls for the sound of gunshots on Mathersfield Drive, in the area of Yonge Street and Summerhill Avenue around 8 p.m.

Insp. Kathy Stephenson told reporters at the scene that officers located a man and a woman suffering from gunshot wounds.''

''The homicide unit has taken over the investigation.

Stephenson said there are reports that a light-coloured vehicle was seen fleeing the area, but there is no suspect information at this time.''

''A police spokesperson told Global News emergency crews were called to a laneway beside townhomes east of Yonge Street near Pricefield Road, south of Summerhill subway station, at around 8 p.m.

The spokesperson said officers received multiple reports from people who heard gunshots

A man was reportedly found on the ground, but police said he later died at the scene''

''The man, identified Saturday by police as Sirac Tesfay, 23, of Toronto, was pronounced dead at the scene after CPR was performed and the woman, 27, was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

According to police, witnesses reported seeing a smaller light-coloured, possibly grey or silver, 4 door sedan with dark tinted windows seen leaving the area in a northbound direction on Yonge Street at a high rate of speed.''

''Investigators are requesting residents, business owners, or anyone who was in the area, to check their security cameras or dash-cams for footage that may assist in this investigation.

Police make arrest in fatal laneway shooting near Yonge and Summerhill

Police have made an arrest in connection with a midtown Toronto shooting that resulted in the death of a 23-year-old man.

''Sirac Tesfay and a 27-year-old woman both sustained multiple gunshot wounds as a result of the Jan. 29 shooting in a laneway near Yonge Street and Summerhill Avenue.

Tesfay was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries but survived''.

''In a news release issued on Thursday, police announced that 20-year-old Toronto resident Henok Mesgena has since been taken into custody in connection with the shooting and charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder.


He appeared in court for the first time on Wednesday.''
