''Police said the death of Mojtaba Shabani, 37, was deemed a homicide after an autopsy was conducted on April 17 at the Centre of Forensic Sciences in Toronto

South Simcoe Police Service Insp. Sheryl Sutton said at a news conference held April 21 that Shabani's last known residence to police was in Toronto, but he appears to have lived a "transient" lifestyle.

The discovery of Shabani's body was made when a couple of kayakers in the canal saw a suspicious object, and reported it to police, Sutton said, adding the body was put there fairly recently to the time it was found.''

''Shabani came to Canada in 2010 from Iran, and police are looking to identify three vehicles they believe he may have had access to: a 2004 grey Honda Accord (license plate CHAW891), a 2001 blue Honda Civic (license plate BVHR490), and a 2003 red Volkswagen (license plate CFPC027).

Although police have deemed the death to be a homicide, the exact cause of death is not being released, as the investigation is ongoing, Sutton said.

Police released an image of Shabani and are appealing to the public for any information on the identities of his next of kin or anyone who may have known him. Also, anyone with information on his whereabouts in the weeks leading up to the discovery of his body is asked to please come forward.''

''Anyone with information is asked to contact Det. Const. Andrew Smith at andrew.smith@southsimcoepolice.ca or 905-775-3311, ext. 1043, or Det. Ben Irwin at ben.irwin@southsimcoepolice.ca or 905-775-3311, ext. 1040. Tips can also be left anonymously with Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS.''

  • "We want to hear from anyone with information regarding his movements in the days and weeks prior to his death. We're also seeking information regarding his next of kin or anyone that may have known him."

Sutton said police would like to locate three vehicles that Shabani "may have had access" to:
    • 2004 grey Honda Accord, licence plate number CHAW891
    • 2001 blue Honda Civic, licence plate number BVHR490
    • 2003 red Volkswagen, licence plate number CFPC027
"If they see these vehicles, if they’re parked in your garage, or they’re parked in a plaza, and you see them, please give police a call. They are registered to Mr. Shabani, and we’re just trying to locate those vehicles."

''South Simcoe Police are set Thursday to ask for the help of Toronto's gay community in connection with a homicide case involving a body found in Bradford last month.

In a news release, police said they will be providing an update at 1 p.m. on the death of 37-year-old Mojtaba Shabani.

They will release a new photo of Shabani and appeal to Toronto's LGBTQ2S+ community.'

''Police said Shabani moved from Iran to Canada in 2010. They added that he had ties to Toronto and appeared "to have lived a transient lifestyle."

Police previously released the descriptions of three vehicles they said were registered to Shabani. They are a 2004 grey Honda Accord with the licence plate 'CHAW891,' a 2001 blue Honda Civic with a licence plate 'BVHR490,' and a 2003 red Volkswagen with a licence plate 'CFPC027.'

Police continue to ask anyone with information to contact them or Crime Stoppers anonymously.''

Planted in the barrel is very disturbing. I often wondered if Bruce McArthur wasn’t alone in his actions?
Is this a case of risky sex? Or is there something he knew?
another middle eastern gay man found dead, another family who don’t know and when they do, they will have many questions. It’s like the beautiful gal abducted in Wasaga Beach, and the Sherman murder. Crickets…wth?

'Mojtaba Shabani, also known as 'Erik' and 'Moji,' found in Bradford Canal on April 15, police say''

''Shabani moved to Canada from Iran in 2010. Police say he was believed to have lived in and frequented the Keele Street and Finch Avenue area as well as the area of Church and Wellesley, also known as the Village.

To date, investigators have been unable to track down any of Shabani's local or international relatives, police said in a news release Thursday.

"As part of the investigation police are trying to piece together Mr. Shabani's life, specifically the last year," the release said. In particular, investigators are looking to speak with anyone with information about his ex-partners, family, friends, employers or recent moves.

'Someone knows something'

"Someone knows something," said Staff Sgt. Dave Phillips. "Your information, no matter how small or insignificant you may think it is, could be the key."

As for whether Shabani might have been targeted for his LGBTQ identity, there's no indication of that as of now, police say.

"But we're not turning a blind eye to any possibility," Phillips said. ''

Police say man found dead in Bradford had ties to Toronto’s gay community

“...We are appealing to those members of that community who may know Mr. Shabani or have any information about his whereabouts or his former whereabouts, his contacts, any of his friends or close associates, any employers, any information is going to be very important to solving this case,”

Snip

“Mr. Shabani has been very quiet in the community. We've been struggling to find people that were familiar with him. We're appealing to any international family, casual acquaintances of Mr. Shabani’s. Someone has information out there that's going to change this case, it's going to give us some more information to go on,”

Thinking about the barrel……instead of wooden barrels (jumped to conclusions) it could be plastic or metal drum type barrels, which could float, but for how long? And current? The re-dug drainage ditch(canal) isn’t very deep, could the drum have floated away from hwy 400 overpass? Thus making no real connection to Bradford community other than drum floating towards it?

Still no details of autopsy, or family located.

Wondering if the U of Guelph prof. with the same last name might be familiar with any of MS's family members in Iran?

speculation, imo, fwiw.
There was a man found in a barrel in Lake Ontario some years ago, apparently the Asian killers put him in a barrel so that his ''ghost'' or whatever is not released, fwiw, imo, speculation.
