Toothpaste tube helps narrow investigation into remains found near Sask. campsite

MOOSE JAW, Sask. - Investigators in Saskatchewan have released photos of items found near a campsite along with human remains of a person who they believe died a decade ago.

''The release didn’t specify whether it was a man or a woman, although it says there’s no evidence to suggest foul play was involved.
Searches yielded a number of personal items including clothing, backpacks and toiletries, and police say one specific item — a tube of toothpaste — helped investigators narrow down a timeframe for when the person may have been in the area.
The toothpaste had a 2013 expiry date, and the manufacturer told investigators that meant it was made no earlier than 2012.''

RCMP seek assistance to identify human remains found in RM of Moose Jaw

Following an earlier announcement by the Moose Jaw RCMP regarding human remains found in the area on April 28, the RCMP’s Historical Case Unit is now asking the public for help identifying the individual who was found dead in a rural wooded area within the RM of Moose Jaw

''What can be disclosed, however, is that the body was found in a rural area outside of Moose Jaw city limits and is on a secluded site on private property.

The identity of the deceased remains unknown, and police suspect they could be from anywhere in Canada as the location is near rail tracks and within reasonable walking distance from the Trans-Canada Highway. Current evidence suggests that the deceased individual is male – however, this will require DNA testing to confirm.''

''The police said the campsite area was searched utilizing tools such as remotely piloted aircraft systems, all-terrain vehicles and metal detectors. These searches yielded many personal items including clothing, backpacks, and toiletries.''

There were several papers in the immediate area, but they were stuck together and unreadable. RCMP rehydrated those papers and found a possible identification and name of the person.

As a result of those findings and DNA analysis, RCMP were able to confirm the identity of the deceased as an adult man from Saskatchewan. Police have notified his family.
