Two people have died, and five injured, after a sword attack by a man in medieval clothes in Quebec's Old city district.

Quebec stabbings leave at least 2 dead, 5 injured

As the sword was obviously real, I wonder if the "medieval clothes" were true copies (such as used by people in SCA or other medieval re-creation groups), or a cheap Halloween costume. I think to be able to kill or injure someone with a copy of a "true medieval sword" would take some skill.

''QUEBEC -- Quebec has woken up after “a night of horror,” Premier Francois Legault said on Sunday after an overnight stabbing rampage in the provincial capital left two people dead and five others injured.

Legault offered his condolences to the victims' loved ones in an early-morning tweet.

“I don't have the words to describe such a tragedy,” he said.

Police in Quebec City are expected to provide an update later Sunday morning on the deadly Halloween night attacks.''

“It's a full moon, it's October 31st. It's Halloween, and it's a lockdown weekend. No one should be out on the streets,” Godoy said. “And I'm in an extremely quiet neighbourhood because there are no tourists nowadays.”

Police had asked area residents to remain indoors as they continued their investigation.''

'Barbarous act': Quebec City stabbing suspect chose victims at random, police say | Toronto Sun
''QUEBEC – The suspect in the Quebec City stabbing was a 24 year-old non-resident of the city with no terrorist affiliations who chose his victims at random, police said Sunday.

They also said the suspect, who has not been named, came to Quebec City intending to harm as many people as he could. He is from a city north of Montreal''.

''Dressed in medieval garb, the suspect committed the attacks using a Japanese sword, a katana, said Robert Pigeon, Quebec City’s police chief.''

Moment man, 24, dressed as a 'samurai' and armed with a sword is arrested in Quebec City | Daily Mail Online

"A 24-year-old man was arrested early Sunday in Quebec City after two people were stabbed to death and five were injured by a suspect wearing 'samurai garb' and brandishing a sword.

Police were called to the historic district shortly before 10:30pm Saturday - on Halloween - and found multiple victims in at least four locations near the provincial parliament building in the capital of the French-speaking Canadian province.

At least two people died in the attack, police confirmed. Five others were rushed to nearby hospitals in serious condition.

The suspect was detained at 1am around a mile from the scene in the city's Old Port following a two-and-a-half-hour manhunt.

Police described the attacker as wearing 'medieval clothes' and Radio-Canada reported that he was dressed as a samurai."

''Court documents identify the accused as Carl Girouard. The tall, thin man with dark hair appeared before a judge by video conference on Sunday. He is expected back in court on Thursday.

The documents do not reveal Girouard's home address, but Radio-Canada has learned he is from Sainte-Thérèse, Que., a town located about 20 kilometres northwest of Montreal.

Police issued a statement on Twitter on Sunday afternoon saying that the coroner had identified the two victims who lost their lives as François Duchesne, 56, and Suzanne Clermont, 61.

The court has ordered a publication ban on any information that could identify the other five victims in this case, according to a spokesperson for the director of criminal and penal prosecutions.''

''Investigators have their work cut out for them, with 25 areas being treated as potential crime scenes where evidence is being gathered.

The flag at the National Assembly in Quebec City has been lowered to half-mast in honour of the victims.''

Carl Girouard has been identified as the suspect who carried out the random sword attacks in Quebec City that left two dead and at least five injured on Halloween night.

Police said at a presser that the suspect was dressed in medieval clothing and was armed with a Japanese-style katana sword. Some witnesses described the suspect as being disguised as a samurai. According to police, the attack was premeditated, but the victims were picked at random.

CG is believed to have been motivated by “personal reasons,” and there are no known connections to terror or hate groups. The investigation is ongoing but CG is not believed to have been motivated by religious or political ideology and the police don’t believe the attack is connected to recent terrorism in France.

CG came to Quebec City “with the intention of doing the most damage possible” during the stabbing and slashing rampage. He has no criminal record but was known to have mental health issues prior to the attacks.

(translated from Journal de Québec, more information has been discovered about Carl Girouard and the night, some political tension issued from it)

Carl Girouard was seen as a solitary and strange boy. As a student in L'École Secondaire des Patriotes (Patriots' Secondary School) in Saint-Eustache, he would ask his classmates to call him ''warrior''. It was a running gag at his school by this point, but no one saw harm in it and continued as Carl liked it. He would make combat movements when he would hear the nickname, says a classmate. Carl also made a project in art class, called ''Warrior Bedroom''.

He was never seen as mean, only as a special and nice boy who was sometimes aggressive. He was followed throughout highschool by a social worker but he still seem to have slipped through the cracks. After highschool, noone heard about Carl since he was absent from social media. His neighbors described him as a night owl, always had his curtains closed and was very calm. 5 years before the assault, he confessed he had a desire to kill people to his primary doctor. The doctor never called to make a claim that Carl might be a danger to society. How he was dressed and his motive reminded officers of someone in a heavy psychotic episode. Because of his age, it could have been his first psychotic episode.

The night of the murders

Carl Girouard, originally from Saint-Thérèse, drove almost 3 hours to Québec City. When he arrived to the capital is unknown. At 22:15, Carl immobilized his car in front of the Frontenac Castle, leaving his engine running, and ran through La Place d'Armes (park) picking his first victim. He stabbed François Duchesne, who died to the wounds. He then locates the Dufferin terrace and attacks a young woman and man on the way up the Frontenac stairs, leading to the Dufferin terrace. At 22:20, two citizens came to help the two victims and called the police. This is a picture taken minutes after the aggression.

Carl would have gone back on his trail to slide into the DeBuade street, stabbed a victim, who had minor wounds. He continues walking towards the City Hall and took the Saint-Jean street. He also took the Rempart street and Saint-Famille street. He kills his last victim, Suzanne Clermont, 61, before continuing his trail the long of the battlements. At 22:30, citizens tries to care for Suzanne. The man is still on the run.

The manhunt

After killing his last victim, the police was already deployed throughout Old Québec, looking for a man in a medieval suite. It's only at 23:57 that they announce the event and recommend for people of old Québec to stay inside. City bus drivers weren't warned about the active samurai. The national alert system Québec En Alerte wasn't used for this case as the police said ''it wasn't something to try during a police investigation''. Confusion aroused on social media as a man cosplaying Samara from the Ring, was also running around Quebec City with a metal bar. They finally had no connection to each other. The police caught Carl after 2 hours and a half of running around.

I will post another post about his arrests and victims later as it is getting late where I am but it is a rough translation in my words. Here's the sources;
