Edmonton police have charged Christine Longridge, Rachael Longridge's 50-year-old mother, with second-degree murder and possession of an offensive weapon.
Police said Rachael Longridge had graduated at the top of her nursing class and was set to start a new position at a local hospital.
"This is a disheartening crime," said Staff Sgt. Bill Clark.
Police were called about reports of an assault around 4:30 p.m. Friday at a home in northwest Edmonton in the area of 122nd Avenue and 132nd Street.
They found Rachael Longridge with severe injuries. She died soon after.
Officers were called to the home regarding an assault just after 4:30 p.m. and found a severely injured woman who died on the scene. A second woman was taken into custody.
The victim is 21-year-old Rachael Longridge.
EPS spokesperson Noreen Remtulla said the initial call came from inside the house.
Another family member returned home at the time and called police for help, Remtulla said.
Her best friends talked about their trip after graduating sooo sad. So much promise. Her friends also made it clear that the mother loved her very much. Seems like something went very wrong. I pray for everyone affected by this.

Longridge's father, Erin Longridge, died of cancer in 2015 after a three-year battle with the disease.
In May, Rachael Longridge had posted about her father on Facebook, calling him her angel and role model.
We are reaching out for assistance for her surviving brother who stumbled upon the scene and now will have to bury his only sibling
I met her on multiple occasions and stayed over for dinner. Her mother really struggled with the passing of her father, with mental illness.
Rachael just graduated as a nurse with marks at the top of her class. She spent her last hours on this earth caring for her mother who has suffered from a diagnosed mental health condition namely bipolar. The last moments of her life were filled with compassion and care. Her mothers illness was something that she understood and accepted.
Her brother came home and saw his mother stabbing Rachael with a knife. He had to grab his mom during the attack. What an ordeal.

A police source said it is believed Christine Longridge was suffering from mental-health issues and that she had been "going downhill lately." But she had not been violent in the past "in any form."
Police have requested she undergo a psychiatric examination
