''Cortes Island is a peaceful place but the serenity was shattered nine years ago when wealthy artist Stefanio Savioli was killed in his secluded, hill-top cabin.

It happened in August of 2010 and friends say the 60-year-old was brutally murdered in his bed.

“We saw the blood,” says close friend Stefano Perdisa. “You could stand in the loft and there was some blood spray on the ceiling of his roof.”
RCMP aren’t releasing any information about the case, which remains unsolved, so Savioli’s son in Italy is now appealing for help''.

''Occasionally, his paintings contained figures that resembled other islanders. The depictions weren’t flattering. Others exuded Stefano Savioli’s love of his subjects. All of his paintings conveyed powerful, often disturbing messages about class, repression and the overpowering beauty of Cortes Island, his home of many years.''

In his self-portrait, Stefano Savioli looks a little like the singular Dutch post-Impressionist who only became famous after his tragic life ended. Same deep, cruel lines. Same wild colours
''In a community of just more than 1,000 people, mostly soft-spoken hippies, artists and retirees, it’s hard to imagine anyone acting on those dark impulses.

“I am completely sad and shocked,” said local sculptor Volker Steigemann, who shared a special connection with Mr. Savioli because they both emigrated from Europe. “Everybody’s surprised.”

''Island residents remembered Mr. Savioli, 60, as a serious and dignified artist who sat under arbutus and cedar trees by the village market, sketching. He was married with a stepson and had a child from a previous marriage in Italy.''
''Mr. Savioli’s next-door neighbour, Gordon Turnbull, said police were being “extremely close-mouthed,” leaving everybody “scratching their heads.” He said some of the figures in Mr. Savioli’s paintings looked like cartoon versions of townspeople. “It is quite possible, I suppose, if you think you see yourself in a painting, and it’s a cartoon caricature, that you might not feel flattered,” he said.''

In 2010, a wealthy artist was killed in his home on a remote island in B.C. Nearly a decade later, the mysterious death is now a cold case. Fifth Estate producer Harvey Cashore returns to Cortes Island, a place he calls home, to search for clues in the brutal murder of Stefano Savioli.'

Cristiano Savioli travels from Italy to remote Cortes Island, B.C., in search of his father's killer. He wants to know why his father's murder nine years ago has not yet been solved, and he is offering a $10,000 reward. CBC obtains police reports that say investigators have a suspect, but there's been no arrest. And what Cristiano discovers is that some in the small, close-knit community don't seem to want the murder solved.'
