Martina the beautiful cockroach doesn’t know coffee beans about love and marriage. That’s where her Cuban family comes in. While some of the Cucarachas offer her gifts to make her more attractive, only Abuela, her grandmother, gives her something really useful: un consejo increíble, some shocking advice.
“You want me to do what?” Martina gasps.
At first, Martina is skeptical of her Abuela’s unorthodox suggestion, but when suitor after suitor fails the Coffee Test, she wonders if a little green cockroach can ever find true love. Soon, only the gardener Pérez, a tiny brown mouse, is left. But what will happen when Martina offers him

After reading this sweet and witty retelling of the Cuban folktale, you’ll never look at a cockroach the same way again.

I cannot tell you enough good things about this author/human. She is from Decatur, GA---her family left cuba in the 50's and started a new life. And what a delightful story that is. She is an acclaimed storyteller and I heard her tell in Atlanta. The melodic voice and bright smile are mesmerizing.
I once tried to get myself together and joined the storytellers. I think I will go back and try that again. For all that is going wrong in the world when you have the good fortune to meet such 'whole people' it is easy to believe in the future and the Goodness that is in 99% of the population.
After all the 'terrible' news that flows from the media and occurs in real life daily---I know that I have to do a lot more to renew myself in every way. If you need a boost to your spirit today this book and author will delight you. I've read her other books to children in homeless shelters and in challenging situations and we all enjoyed ourselves. Laughter is the best medicine along with good friends and good food, books, music and the simpler pleasures of life. Enjoy.
