[h=3]Details of Disappearance[/h] Atterbury was last seen near Pike National Forest in Castle Rock, Colorado on June 27, 1981. She disappeared with her boyfriend, Oscar Joseph McNear Jr. Photographs of McNear are unavailable. His date of birth is April 5, 1951; he was 30 years old at the time of his disappearance. He's 6'0 tall and 160 pounds.

Atterbury and McNear were originally from Springfield, Illinois, and moved to Colorado in May 1981. Neither of them contacted their families in Illinois after the move; they were never heard from again.

Investigators believe they were shot to death in an argument with two men from Springfield. Police got tips that their bodies were placed in 55-gallon drums and buried on property owned by one of the suspects in the Rocky Mountain foothills, half a mile south of South Platte, Colorado. A search of the area in 1985 turned up nothing, however.

No one has ever been charged in McNear and Atterbury's cases; their disappearances remain unsolved.

Colorado authorities also were convinced that Gabriel was responsible for the murders of two Springfield residents who moved to Colorado in 1981, then disappeared.

They searched his property in 1985 after Tony Ashford, who was in prison in Illinois, told investigators he helped bury the bodies of Cindy Atterberry and Oscar "Joe" McNear encased in steel drums on Gabriel's isolated property. Ashford and McNear had been associates of Gabriel since his time in Springfield.

Despite extensive digging over a two-week period on the eight acres near the Pike National Forest, no bodies were ever found and the case came to a standstill.

There's a court transcript here of a Oscar Joseph McNear who was convicted of burglary and armed robbery in 1975. I wonder if that's how Oscar (and Cynthia) fell into the company of career criminal Julian “Babe” Gabriel, who is suspected of their murders. Gabriel died in a Colorado prison of apparent natural causes in 2012.

Strange that they moved to Colorado in May and disappeared June 27th, yet never called their families after they arrived in Colorado. I wonder how if they initially traveled to Colorado with the 2 men or if they followed them there.
