Three witnesses told deputies they observed a renowned malaria specialist punch a 14-year-old girl between two and four times last Friday while skiing at Colorado's Beaver Creek resort.

Scott Filler, 41, was with his 4-year-old son when the teen girl, swerving to avoid another skier, accidentally bumped into the boy, causing a collision, a spokesman with the Eagle County Sheriff's Office said.

While I understand that a father could become very emotional if he believes his child to be injured, I cannot believe that any adult male would think it is ok to punch a 14 year old girl with a closed fist! Much less to punch her repeatedly.....what a sterling example for his little son, huh?

Geeze buddy, accidents happen! I hope he is prosecuted.

Good Lord...what is wrong with this guy? I hope his son is being protected from his him....he's dangerous.

By all accounts, it sounds like the doctor is mortified at his behavior, but still....like you, I have a hard time imagining that my immediate reaction to my child being knocked down would be to start swinging....seems like I would have run straight to my child and not to the person that knocked into him.

This man needs some anger management training, I think.

Where do you read and/or get that he's "mortified" by his behavior?!?! The only thing in the article about his "feelings" is:

"Filler, charged with misdemeanor child abuse, told deputies he thought the girl was skiing carelessly and had seriously injured his son. The boy was not hurt, however, and Filler apologized. The girl was treated for minor injuries at a local medical center"

That doesn't sound like mortification to me... It sounds like an a-hole trying to make excuses for an inexcusable behaviour...

And if the fourteen year old's father had then gone papa bear on Filler, I am sure Filler wouldn't be accepting an apology for daddy's response.

Magic,

I found a few other articles that mentioned it - will try to go find the links. They said that he was pretty devastated by his behavior.

Here's one: http://spotlight.vitals.com/2010/12...ged-for-punching-young-skier-at-beaver-creek/

Here's one that said he apologized: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/12/21/scott-filler-accused-of-p_n_799971.html

Don't get me wrong - his reaction was completely inappropriate, but I don't think it was calculated and I do think he feels badly.

What a jerk! I don't think he is sorry and I wonder if this is his first time flying off and punching someone. He may be sorry that this incident occured in public but that's about it.

The police officer says a ski instructor intervened and Filler apologized when he realized his son wasn't seriously hurt.

Doesn't sound mortified to me.

His attorney in his press release said Filler was mortified, and would have reacted differently if he had known she was a child. Not that it was unacceptable altogether, but had he evaluated this to be someone else's child he wouldn't have beaten her. If she was 19, 44, or 90 maybe? If it was a grown man that could have defended himself, yeah I am sure he would have reacted differently.

I don't think unless you are very predisposed to violence you punch anyone in the face. Repeatedly. And if you are a man you are probably less likely to punch a woman in the face. Repeatedly. And if you are an adult man who has not already lowered your inhibitions to violence you don't punch a fourteen year old in the face. Repeatedly. Until someone intervenes.

A parent that thinks their child is seriously hurt attends to their child's medical needs.

There are many highly educated, highly structured, respectful members of society that are control freaks in every aspect of their lives. And some of them are reknowned egomaniacs.

I am not buying this attorneys sales pitch and he should rethink it.
Rage filled parent, okay, I get that.
It was an accident first of all.
He didn't grab and shake her.
He didn't scream at her to watch out (for an accident that resulted from her avoiding a fallen skier).
He didn't throw her to the ground.
He didn't attend to his child.

He wasn't protecting his child from an ongoing threat.
He was mad and his response to his anger (not protective over-reaction) was to closed fist punched a fourteen year old girl in the face.
Repeatedly.
Until someone intervened to stop him.

Don't get me wrong, if he encountered anyone of any age attacking his child I probably be completely on his side even if in the aftermath people wanted to dissect what was acceptable and what was overkill to stop said threat. That is primal, that is adrenaline, that is judging split second reactions and decisions. This was a skiing accident. Someone swerved around a fallen skiier. It wasn't a group of reckless drunken teens with no regard for those around them.

And last on my rant, Misdemeanor child abuse?

If this wasn't an esteemed doctor with a high price defense attorney and was instead your run of the mill Joe Blow with a public defender do you think this would be a misdemeanor charge? How in the world is this not a felony charge, at least as a starting point, on the part of the prosecutor.

And the victim is visiting from Mexico, want to take bets on whether the witness is available when trial rolls around? That will either be convenient or cost effective for the esteemed gentleman..... or let me guess, deferred sentencing while we go to rehab and the criminal record gets erased? Not sure which one I would bet on. Probably the witness not being able or willing to testify. But rehab, that is a close runner up.

Bleck

Very nicely done rant, impatientredhead! I concur.

This guy plead guilty to the charges.
I would not be surprised to learn that he hits his wife when she makes him angry.

"District Attorney Mark Hurlbert says Filler was sentenced to anger management classes and restitution, the amount of which would be determined by the girl.

Prosecutors also sought community service, but Hurlbert says the judge fined Filler $500 instead.

Three witnesses told deputies they observed Filler punch girl between two and four times."

The article features his lawyer's comments, not Filler's. And even the lawyer's comments imply that Filler's behavior would be okay if the person he attacked was a grown woman and not a teenager: "Had he realized it was another child, he would have reacted differently,” Katz said."

Crickey! What is wrong with these people. Filler should have been at his son's side not punching out the girl who accidentally bumped into him.

I've never skied in my life, but I gotta ask - is a ski-run really the safest place for a 4 year old??

Probably not but we took ours at that age. We just stayed very close to them because of all of the folks (mostly snowboarders - not trying to start a debate! :D) who do zoom really fast and not look where they're going.

I think this guy really way over-reacted (obviously). And I hope to God the restitution is more than $500...

yeah, i'm sure those few classes and a few bucks will make him think next time (can you read sarcasm? hmm....) blah pooey on him and pooey on this laxness of the situation. he punched. a child. over and over. before checking on his son. then said well if i'd known it was a child....not i don't know what came over me. just blah.
