Coronavirus cases surge to 400 in Italy
''The number of coronavirus cases in Italy has jumped to 400, amid international efforts to contain the spread of the deadly outbreak.

The rise in Italy, the main focus of infection in Europe, represents a 25% surge in 24 hours.

Several European countries announced new cases traced to Italy.

Also on Wednesday, the World Health Organization said that for the first time the virus was spreading faster outside China, where it originated.''

Thanks to you and Tbone, Dixie. I found the info in the other thread on the masks. But the manager has said they are not allowed to hold any for people or place orders. It's first come first serve apparently. Sooo I guess we'll need to rush in next Friday first thing and see if we can get some.

Trying to make sure to get the right kind of mask is very confusing because there are so many different models. Some have valves and some dont. I found this CDC site link below to be helpful to make sure the ones I got were listed here.

"The N95 respirator is the most common of the seven types of particulate filtering facepiece respirators. This product filters at least 95% of airborne particles but is not resistant to oil.

This web page provides a table of NIOSH-approved N95 respirators, listed alphabetically by manufacturer."

BREAKING: California reports 1 new case of coronavirus in someone with no recent travel, no known links to previous cases - WaPo Tracking coronavirus: Map, data and timeline

Washington Post announces its Northern CA
I've gone to your link but don't see where it's specified that the new case is in Northern Cal?

In the press conference Trump indicated one of the US cases is pretty serious, and I got the sense it's this new case. Anyone know? TIA

Saudi Arabia temporarily bans religious visits to the kingdom amid coronavirus fears
The kingdom announced it will suspend entry for religious purposes, including pilgrimages to Mecca and visits to the Prophet's Mosque in Madina, in an attempt to limit the spread of the contagion.

7 weeks to The Hajj

They have to get this under control well before that

Here we go again with this Cali business...

The faster the thread moves...

Noting the patterns of “waves”.
(Similar to the Spanish Flu of 1918 as we know...the three waves...any way that was a long time ago, things have changed a lot since then (couldn’t help but be reminded it of it today though when I heard about the soldier...note to go back to that...)

Anyway re: the waves, this is worrisome, moo (and reminds me of what Dr. Nancy yesterday said re: “the when” being unknown.)

I also keep thinking about Dr. Mike hypothetically pulling out the time intervals of two months and six months, and I wonder what that will look like.

Hawaii residents urged to take precautions as CDC issues stark warning of coronavirus outbreak

HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - The state is urging residents to take steps now to prepare for the potential spread of the coronavirus to Hawaii amid a stark warning from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that the virus could cause a “significant disruption” to American life.

“It’s not so much a matter of if this will happen anymore, but rather more a question of exactly when this will happen and how many people in this country will have severe illness,” said Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases.

“We cannot hermetically seal off the United States to a virus, and we need to be realistic about that."

I was thinking being quarantined in Hawaii wouldn’t be all that bad..

Six months? I’d really better stock up.

Captain , we’re gonna need a lot more cat litter...

President Trump: "We have 15 cases and within a day they are fully recovered"???

Huh?
MOO

I think I found it:

The president revealed that of the "15" Americans confirmed to have the virus, eight have "returned to their homes to stay in their homes until fully recovered, one is in the hospital, and five have fully recovered; and one is, uh, we think in pretty good shape, and is in between hospital and going home." Trump later said the person was "pretty sick and hopefully will recover."

So far, there have been 60 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the U.S. in total. That figure includes individuals who have been repatriated to the United States.

Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar later clarified at the podium. 15 people were in the initial set of cases, three more came from evacuation flights, and 42 from the Diamond Princess ship.

Azar warned that the "degree of risk has the potential to change quickly."

Trump says coronavirus vaccine coming along 'rapidly,' appoints Pence to head task force

Trump said that a vaccine is being developed "rapidly" and "coming along very well."

Anthony Fauci, who heads the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said that a vaccine would not be applicable to the epidemic for a "year to a year-and-a-half," due to delays from testing, development, production, and distribution.

How is the UK getting ready for coronavirus?
''The NHS has detailed escalation plans to cope with outbreaks of disease and surges in demand. Key to respiratory illnesses caused by coronavirus are the five specialist hospitals that have treated the UK patients. Another 19 regional infectious disease units are on stand-by to take patients if numbers dramatically increase.

All hospitals have been asked to set up isolation pods in case patients with the virus come in, although the official advice is to phone NHS 111 and self-isolate.

Currently there is no treatment or cure, so hospitals are trying to relieve the symptoms. Specialist equipment called ECMO is available at a small number of units to support the most severely ill patients if their lungs fail.

As well as looking for a vaccine, researchers are exploring whether existing treatments for other conditions, such as malaria and HIV, can be used to help coronavirus patients''.

Up until today I didnt bother to look up the definition of what a Pandemic really is. There is a section in this link that gives a definition of these three things (Outbreak, Epidemic, Pandemic), and it has been helpful to me to understand the definition of each.

These three words are highlighted in red to find the place where they list the definition of each of these three things (Outbreak, Epidemic, Pandemic):

When Does an Outbreak Become an Epidemic?

I am woefully behind on the news in the past few hours and on this thread.... must catch up.

I was at a (routine) doctor appointment at a hospital in San Francisco. Imagine my joy to refresh the BNO twitter feed to hear there’s a new case in California....

Good time to be hanging around San Francisco hospitals :eek:
