The number of people already infected by the mystery virus emerging in China is far greater than official figures suggest, scientists have told the BBC.
There have been 41 laboratory-confirmed cases of the new virus, but UK experts estimate the figure is closer to 1,700.
New virus in China ‘will have infected hundreds'
Up to 4,500 patients in China may have caught the same strain of coronavirus that has killed two people, scientists fear.
Health officials in Wuhan – the city at the heart of the outbreak which started in December – confirmed four new cases today, taking the total to 48.
But Imperial College London researchers say this may be the 'tip of the iceberg' after analysing flights out of the city.

"Scientists have identified a new strain of the coronavirus that has become dominant worldwide and appears to be more contagious than the versions that spread in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a new study led by scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
The new strain appeared in February in Europe, migrated quickly to the East Coast of the United States and has been the dominant strain across the world since mid-March, the scientists wrote.

In addition to spreading faster, it may make people vulnerable to a second infection after a first bout with the disease, the report warned."

“The story is worrying, as we see a mutated form of the virus very rapidly emerging, and over the month of March becoming the dominant pandemic form,” study leader Bette Korber, a computational biologist at Los Alamos, wrote on her Facebook page. “When viruses with this mutation enter a population, they rapidly begin to take over the local epidemic, thus they are more transmissible.”

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, will join Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield and other administration representatives in testifying before a Senate committee on May 12.

The announcement comes as members of President Trump's coronavirus task force are being asked to limit their appearances on Capitol Hill despite ongoing calls from lawmakers for more oversight into the administration's coronavirus response. Last week, the Trump administration blocked Fauci from appearing before a House committee on the subject of spending on coronavirus testing.

President Trump told reporters Tuesday that he doesn't want the officials appearing before House Democrats.

COME ON!!! THIS IS RIDICULOUS!!! imo

Virginia sees jump in COVID-19 testing
I'm confused about what this means. Here's a quote from the link:

"During a COVID-19 briefing, The Virginia Department of Health announced it will now count the number of positive virus tests instead of the number of people who test positive.

That means if one person is tested three-times and all three tests come back positive, it counts as three instead of how the numbers were being counted before, which would have only been one because it was a single patient."

???

I was on a national conference call this morning with university and college administrators and legal experts regarding potential lawsuits against colleges and universities in fall 2020 from students and employees (faculty and staff). Apparently there is a bill in Congress right now (as mentioned in the above post) that would protect universities from lawsuits if a student or employee contracted COVID-19 while on campus (think residence halls, classrooms, etc.). Universities would have to have measures like social distancing and other mitigation practices in place. But suppose a student went to an off-campus party and was infected there, and brought the infection back to his residence hall, and other examples of how difficult it would be to enforce the safety measures. So universities might support this legislation through their national advocacy groups in Washington. No decision to support or not support has been made yet.

Iowa news today: May 5: 19 additional deaths as COVID-19 death toll in Iowa passes 200, 408 new cases (WATCH Gov. Reynolds)
408 new confirmed cases today and very sadly 19 more have passed away which is a new daily high for deaths. We now have a total of 10,111 confirmed cases and 207 have passed away. 3.572 have recovered.
Iowa officials reveal hundreds of COVID-19 cases at plants Iowa has been pleading for these numbers for long time and wow I'm shocked at the numbers for Tyson in Perry. I feel so bad for all of these plant workers.

That's exactly how I read it. I have no idea why they made this change. I read it aloud to a couple of people just now (one with a background in statistics) and they both thought that's what it meant and wondered how that could be an actual quote.

This is the report....

Spike mutation pipeline reveals the emergence of a more transmissible form of SARS-CoV-2

From what I can tell from this and other reports (there were several pre-prints about this in the last few days), one of the main things about this new strain is that it has a means of entering T-cells and disabling them that reduces the innate immune response that we depend upon to fight viruses. This would help explain why, especially in Italy, Spain, France and New York, the relatively high incidence of pneumonia in the most seriously ill.

As to the "more transmissible" part, what I'm reading says that at least one strain of CoVid (the one on the East Coast) is contagious from about 24 hours after transmission and reaches peak transmissibility just before the fever shows up in the patient. So it has about 6-10 days to transmit itself, while the transmitter may have no symptoms or only a slight cough or perhaps a sore throat.

Also, in one study of symptoms of the hospitalized, they found that loss of smell/taste was only present in about 3-5%, which is much lower than was originally thought. Cough and sore throat were the most common symptoms, hence the inability of the patient to conceive that this could be such a serious illness.

So it makes sense for people who have the slightest reason to think they've been exposed to go get tested (as they are now doing in Los Angeles, although there's not been that big a rush to take advantage of the new "test everyone" program).

If it's true that the same strain that is so readily transmissible before symptoms show up is also more deadly, we have a much bigger problem on our hands. It would make sense for the states that do not yet have any or much of this strain (and the nations of course) to close their borders or require quarantine, as some states are already doing.
