Appeal for information of man last seen in 1953

Police are appealing for public assistance in relation to an historical missing person case.

Donald Gordon Buckley was last seen by family members at his Warwick Farm home in 1953.

There was some minor correspondence from Mr Buckley the following year in 1954 which suddenly ceased and there has been no further contact since.

At the time of his disappearance, he was about 24 years old and was described as being of Caucasian appearance, 175cm tall, thin build, short brown hair and brown eyes.

Mr Buckley was employed as a labourer and at the time and was married with two sons aged two and four respectively and a baby daughter.

He was known to frequent the Glenfield area.

It was not until earlier this year that a family member reported him as missing to Blacktown Police Station.

Officers from Blacktown Police Area Command commenced an investigation where extensive inquiries have failed to locate any trace of Mr Buckley since 1954.

Crime Manager of Blacktown Police Area Command, Inspector Jason Pietruszka, said police were desperate to obtain any information about Mr Buckley.

“Despite the passage of time we are very keen to find out what happened to Mr Buckley,” Inspector Pietruszka said.

“There is no doubt that this is an unusual set of circumstances in that the missing person report wasn’t lodged until 70 years after he was last seen but that doesn’t prevent us from investigating this matter.”

“It appears there may have been some marital problems which prompted him to leave the family home.”

“If Mr Buckley is still alive – which is not out of the realms of possibility – he would be in his mid-90’s now,” Inspector Pietruszka said.

Anyone with information about Mr Buckley is urged to contact Blacktown Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Missing since 1953: NSW police investigate disappearance of Sydney man 70 years ago

When Donald Gordon Buckley’s granddaughter reported her grandfather missing earlier this year, New South Wales police initially didn’t think it sounded like an unusual case.

Until they asked when he went missing – and the answer was 1953.

The spokesperson said if a person has been missing for more than 100 years or if a death from more than 100 years ago is uncovered, police don’t investigate the matter. But this case still falls well within the timeline of warranting an investigation, the spokesperson said.

“It’s certainly up there as one of the oldest [cold cases],” the spokesperson said. “The report has been lodged by a family member and we’ve got to follow it up.”

Son's final wish

Inspector Pietruszka told ABC News that the family member had been making inquiries over the years to try and locate her grandfather.

The death of one of Mr Buckley's sons then spurred a renewed interest in the search.

"Her father had passed away a number of years earlier and made this request to her towards the later end of his life that he obviously wanted to know his father and ... never really got to know him.

After initial inquiries into what happened or where he was turned up empty, Blacktown police station picked up the case.

"It's quite unique and very unusual," Inspector Pietruszka said.

"But it's actually quite a sad story as well, in that this young girl is obviously trying to fulfil her father's wishes.

"She's making every attempt and every inquiry to locate her grandfather and just get the backstory of what occurred."

Mr Buckley, then aged 24, walked out on his wife, sons aged four and two and a baby daughter after reportedly having problems in his marriage.

Following a court order, he made a couple of child support payments in 1954, but then the payments stopped and nobody has heard from him since.

'The kids have now grown up to become adults, they've had kids themselves,' a NSW police spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said it is likely that one of three things happened to the missing man, who was known to frequent the Glenfield area, 11km south of Warwick Farm.

'He's taken his own life ... he's changed his identity to get out of paying child support, or thirdly, he's met foul play.

'It's not out of the realm of possibility he's still alive.'
