Earl Kuhl, a Burnsville, WV resident, was last seen April 8, 1998, at Louis A. Johnson Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Clarksburg. Kuhl, then 81, had been admitted as a patient for surgery on one of his carotid arteries. Kuhl was present at the 11 p.m. bed check but was nowhere to be found when nurses checked on him again at 1 a.m. This was the last confirmed sighting.
At the time of his disappearance, he was a Caucasian male about 5 foot 11 inches tall, 235 pounds and had gray hair and hazel eyes. He was an insulin-dependent diabetic. He has a scar on his neck and his left eye drooped downward. He wore eyeglasses.
Kuhl probably left the hospital wearing a green hospital robe.
Authorities considered foul play, but no evidence of it was found. Some theorized that Kuhl simply walked away.
Although he was diabetic, Kuhl was not known to have any medical conditions that would make him prone to wander off. Kuhl had been cleared to leave the hospital but he was supposed to be picked up by a family member the next morning.
Search dogs led police to the West Fork River. A search of the river turned up nothing and authorities now think an orderly searching for Kuhl near the river created the scent that led the dogs there.
Kuhl's information has been entered into national missing persons databases and his dental records are available for comparison. Police have found no unidentified males matching his description.
