Florida police arrest 6 people accused of sexually exploiting teen boys

Six people were arrested in an eight-month long, statewide human trafficking investigation involving teenage victims who were sexually exploited.

The investigation started in May 2018 when a Louisiana law enforcement agency contacted the St. Petersburg Police Department with information that a missing 17-year-old boy from Louisiana was at a mobile home at 4000 24th St. North, Lot 12, Silver Lake Mobile Home Park in St. Petersburg.

Investigators believe the victim was lured through Discord, an online gaming app that allows users to communicated directly with each other. They used it to coordinate picking the teen up and driving him to St. Pete.

When officers arrived at the mobile home park, they found the missing teen and discovered another 16-year-old boy living in the same trailer along with four adults: Mark Earl Dennis, Andrew Barry Dennis, Curtis Lee Gruwell and Michael Wayne Schwartz.

"The teenage victim in this case was lured from his family with promises of a better life, instead he was moved into a filthy trailer and used as a sex slave for nearly a year," said Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody.

The trailer was described as being filthy and filled with animal feces.

According to St. Pete Police, for a whole year, that 16-year-old was introduced to sadomasochism and used as a sex slave by Mark and Andrew Dennis, Gruwell, Schwartz and their associates Michael Ray Biasdel and JR Gauthier. He did not attend school or receive medical care in that time.

After police made contact in May of 2018, Mark and Andrew Dennis, Gruwell and Schwartz moved from St. Pete to Lehigh Acres in Lee County.

Seven people have been arrested after a 16-year-old boy was allegedly kept as a sex slave for a whole year having been promised him a better life away from his family.

The six Florida men and one woman were caught after luring a second teenager to their 'deplorable' trailer over an online gaming app, police say.

Four of the men are accused of repeatedly sexually abusing the first boy at the squalid mobile home in St. Petersburg. He is said to have been found living on a small mattress surrounded by animal cages and feces.

The Tampa Bay Times reports he was rescued in May last year after police investigated the disappearance of a different missing teen, a 17-year-old from Louisiana.

Police this week confirmed they had arrested seven people, including a married couple, in connection with the case.

Janine Pierce said she just knew something was very wrong when a 17-year-old boy, who she ministered at Waldheim United Methodist Church, left his home in the middle of the night with his computer and some clothes.

St. Petersburg Police said 34-year-old Curtis Gruwell picked up the boy after luring him away from his family with the promise of a better life.

“We had no note. We had nothing. We had a happy kid the day before at youth group. And the day after he just vanished,” Pierce said.

Investigators said the boy was groomed by traffickers in a video game messaging app called Discord.

The better life he was promised was, in reality, a squalid trailer in St. Petersburg, Florida, where police said four adult men had been keeping a 16-year-old boy as a sex slave for a year.
