Hours after Natalie Belmonte and her son, Gerard Belmonte Lopes, arrived home from a party early Sunday, a neighbor’s surveillance camera captured a sequence of events that police believe shows exactly what happened to the Pembroke Pines Realtor following her slaying:

• 2:49 a.m.: Natalie Belmonte’s red Lexus pulls into the driveway. Two people leave the car and enter her home on the 19300 block of NW Fifth St.

• 5:08 a.m.: A person whom police said matches the general appearance of Gerard Belmonte — who is 5-feet, 6-inches tall, and weighs 195 pounds — walks out of the house, gets into the Lexus, and repositions the car with the trunk near the front door.

• 5:12 a.m.: The person re-appears at the front door, drags a large object the size of an adult body to the car, and struggles to load the object into the trunk. The person re-enters the house several times.

He claims he came home and was drunk. I could have surmised as much. Alcohol is such a catalyst for violence!!

The slaying is all the more tragic because of their special bond: in 2000 in Broward Circuit Court, Natalie formally adopted Gerard, then only 10, from her native Guyana. She rescued the boy after his father — Natalie’s uncle — had died.
More recently, Natalie Belmonte had intervened to free him from the clutches of the judicial system for pawning $20,000 worth of her jewelry.

“She’d do anything for him,” said Aquila Rodgers, who worked with Natalie at a Weston real estate office. “She loved him as if he were her own.”

no good deed goes unpunished, huh? :(

Loved ones gathered at a nearby school to mourn Natalie Belmonte, whose son is charged with killing her.

Over a hundred white candles lit the darkened brush where Pembroke Pines realtor and mother Natalie Belmonte’s body was found Wednesday. Friends and family gathered at 7:00 pm on Friday at Chapel Trail Elementary School and walked together along 196th avenue holding hands and reciting prayers in honor of Belmonte.

From October 2013:

A Broward judge said Gerard Lopes Belmonte resembles the "portrait of a true sociopath" for not showing remorse or emotion after raping and killing his adoptive mother and dumping her body in a swamp.

On Wednesday, Lopes was sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison...

A jury convicted Lopes last month of second-degree murder in a case that showed how the family that adopted him was betrayed... At some point after they got home, Lopes attacked Belmonte, according to prosecutors. His semen was later found in her body, and the victim's sister testified that the only way it could have gotten there was against Belmonte's will.

I just heard about this disturbing case through Dr. Todd Grande's YouTube channel. I'm surprised I didn't hear about it at the time. Maybe it didn't get much national news coverage.

It reminded me of another disturbing case from back in 2006:

"Authorities say Helms' mother was apparently passed out drunk on the couch when the rape started.

"'During the attack she did come to and recognize her attacker. (Reporter: As her son?) As her son,' said Smith.

"That's when, according to the police report, the mother "tried to get away, but he held her down until he was finished."
