Four children being held hostage by suspect who shot officer overnight
Jun 11 2018 07:28AM PDT

"ORLANDO, Fla. (FOX 35 WOFL) - The Orlando Police Department says that a SWAT situation is ongoing at the Westbrook Apartments on Eaglesmere Drive, which is just north of Universal Studios. Four children are being held hostage by a man who shot one Orlando police officer overnight.

They tweeted that at 11:45 p.m., police responded to a domestic violence call at the complex. Officers met a woman off-site. She told them that her boyfriend battered her. Officers went to arrest him at an apartment, but the suspect fired shots, striking one of their officers.

Police Chief John Mina says that the officer was taken to the Orlando Regional Medical Center, where surgery was done. He is expected to survive, but his injuries are serious.

Mina also said that SWAT is currently at the apartment complex, as the suspect is holding four hostages. The hostages are all children, ages 1, 7, 10, and 12 years old. SWAT is working to negotiate this, with their main concern being the safety of the children. Mina believes that some of the hostages may be the suspect's children."

What is this world coming to?! Why do parents treat children so cruelly? The three older children are being exposed to a traumatic nightmare that will have long lasting effects on them. Who knows, it could be the turning point in their lives of whether they follow good or evil. A lot will have to do with what their life experiences have been up to now.

Thank heavens the older two children can look after the one and seven year old.

Why don’t the police knock a hole in the wall from an adjoining wall to enter the apartment and rescue the children? Ugh, guess that is a dumb idea as it cannot be done quietly!

Do we know what the guys beef is?

Little news was provided in the article. Not even his name.

I have been trying to think of ways LE could get him to give up without hurting the children and it is a tough situation.
When LE took out the Las Vegas shooter they blew the door apart and entered. That was different though because he was not holding hostages. The hostages makes it scary and difficult.

I think they are hoping time will take its toll and hoping he will realize he has no alternative but to surrender. Lets hope he loves the kids enough not to hurt them.

This is scary. And an officer is already hurt. We dont want anybody else hurt and especially the children.
Imagine how worried the mother must feel right now for her kids. I cannot even try to imagine as it must be awful time for her.

Lets hope he gives up peacefully and soon.

‘It was horrible:' Residents describe seeing Orlando police officer shot
"The now 12-hour standoff caused Maria Tapia and Miguel Lopez to evacuate their apartment No. 136, which is a floor above where the shooting occurred and the standoff continues.

“It was around midnight and we were sleeping and we heard somebody knocking on the door on the second floor,” Lopez said. “Suddenly somebody opened the door and we just hear, ‘Pow, pow, pow, pow’ -- four gun shots.”

Tapia said she started crying when she looked out her apartment window and saw the officer down.

“We saw the police officer laying on the ground with blood and everything,” Tapia said. “It was horrible.”

"Westbrook Apartment residents are being questioned at a nearby Holiday Inn, according to hotel staff.

Is this still going on?
Yes the hostage situation is continuing, poor kids.
Live coverage: Orlando officer shot; police say gunman holding 4 children hostage
Updated: 5:15 PM EDT Jun 11, 2018
ORLANDO, Fla. —
A man suspected of battering his girlfriend shot an Orlando police officer overnight and then barricaded himself inside an apartment with four young children, police say.

Police are urging 35-year-old Gary Lindsey Jr. to release the release the four children he is holding hostage and peacefully end a standoff that has lasted for about 13 hours.
Police said there is no indication that the children being held hostage have been injured. Mina said during a news conference Monday afternoon that police are in no hurry and do not want to rush the situation. He said they just want to see the children released unharmed.

Police negotiators have been in communication with Lindsey multiple times since the standoff started around midnight.

Court records show that Lindsey has an extensive criminal history, which includes arrests for arson and domestic violence.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - A man who police say shot an officer then barricaded himself in an apartment with four children was being urged Monday to release the hostages and peacefully end a standoff that had lasted more than 12 hours.

Police negotiators have communicated with suspect Gary Lindsey five times since the standoff
at an apartment started around midnight Sunday, Chief John Mina said at a news conference.

"We are urging him to release the children and let this come to a peaceful resolution," Mina said.

The children with Lindsey range in age from 1 to 11. Some of them are Lindsey's children and some belong to his girlfriend.

"Our main concern is the safety of the children in that apartment," Mina said.
