A court in Seine-et-Marne in France is finally hearing details this week about the killing of three-year-old Bastien Champenois in a washing machine in November 2011. Prosecutors say that father Christophe Champenois, 37, locked his son into the washing machine, put it on a wash cycle and surfed the Internet while the little boy screamed and drowned. He's charged with aggravated murder.
Bastien's mother, 29-year-old Charlene Cotte, told investigators she played with her five-year-old daughter as her son died. The mother's charges of failing to prevent a crime have been upgraded to aiding and abetting murder. She began a relationship with the dad when she was 15 and he was 23 and told the court she did not want to give birth to her young son.
The couple initially maintained Bastien drowned in the bath, but their then-five-year-old insisted her father put him in the washing machine 'because he was naughty at school'.
Christophe, who is now paralyzed on his right side due to a brain tumor, told the court he can't remember anything about the killing although he has managed to recount his difficult childhood as the son of an alcoholic, as did Charlene. Child protection services are also under the spotlight in the case, as they had nine reports of the children being in danger or at risk. The case is continuing today.
