''A third unexplained disappearance of a child haunts the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department. That of Mathieu Haulbert, then 10 years old, who disappeared on June 25, 1983 in Peyroules, near Castellane. He was never found.

Last February, the Aix-en-Provence Court of Appeal ordered that the file be examined by the Judicial Center dedicated to unsolved cases and serial crimes, located in Nanterre in the Hauts-de-Seine. On the day of his disappearance, Mathieu Haulbert had just left, alone and on a bicycle, his parents’ farm to join that of a shepherd, three kilometers away, from where a mini-transhumance started to Castellane.

The gendarmes of Digne-les-Bains, the Parisian police officers of the central office for the repression of human trafficking, then the Research Section (SR) of Aix-en-Provence had not managed to find the trace of Mathieu, vanished a few minutes after having left his bicycle at the edge of the main road to cover the rest of the journey on foot. The portraits of Mathieu, aged at 25 and 40, widely distributed, came to nothing. The creation, in March 2022, of the unit specializing in serial and unsolved crimes revived the hope of Mathieu’s parents to snatch the truth from the past.''

During the months following the disappearance, disturbing elements and testimonies emerge. Two Cannes women say in particular that they saw the little boy in the company of a man. But the information ultimately yields nothing.

Even more intriguing: Mathieu's parents one day receive a strange call. In the handset, a voice blows "Hello here it's Mathieu", before the communication is cut off. But nothing works: the investigators are reluctant to carry out the necessary investigative acts.

There will still be a suspect on file. Eight years after the disappearance of Mathieu Haulbert, Christophe Maréchal, a resident of Peyroules, reconsiders his first declarations: while he said, in 1983, having spent the afternoon with Georges Laugier, another resident, to play petanque, he finally indicates that this is not the case. His friend, he says, asked him to find an alibi for him as investigators began their investigations.

Mathieu obtained his family's permission to help herd the sheep (transhumance - moving livestock seasonally) of the neighbor who was about two miles away. He traveled on his bicycle which was later found abandoned on the edge of the road.
Five days after his disappearance, the track of the accident is discarded and an investigation for kidnapping by fraud or violence was opened.
On May 14, 1988, Laugier was placed in police custody and then charged with the kidnapping of a minor under the age of 15. He appeared before the sitting court in January 1992, but the thinness of the charges against him enabled him to obtain an acquittal.

This report confirms, the neighbor, the shepherd, was "the designated culprit" or the suspect.

Mathieu Haulbert disappeared on June 25, 1983, while walking on the Napoleon road between Peyroules and Castellane, in the Alpes de Haute-Provence. The little boy, aged 10, was going to join a shepherd for a transhumance. He was never seen again. A man living in the region, Georges Laugier, was tried before the Assizes of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence in 1992, and acquitted after four days of hearing.

"Disappearance cases are often the most difficult because there is no crime scene, no scientific element to exploit. And when justice is in failure, the file is a little left aside"

"I have no hope of life, only that of finding his body and knowing the truth. It is difficult to imagine that he has vanished", confide, with La Provence, the parents of Mathieu Haulbert

This story is so sad for Mathieu's parents. How sad that Mathieu was duped by a nobody. A no good stinking thinking killer. RIP Mathieu - who must have been terrified at age 10yo.

It is one of the oldest French cold cases: the disappearance of Mathieu Haulbert, ten years old, near Castellane (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence) on June 25, 1983. In forty years, a neighbor was judged then acquitted, the trail of kidnapping by a sect has been raised and that of a serial killer is still questioned. For the past few weeks, the investigation has been entrusted to the cold cases center in Nanterre. Narrative

After leaving the family land, he travels a few hundred meters, puts his bike against a stone shelter and a whip he had probably made to guide the sheep, takes the road, says hello to a friend of the family and tells him that he is going to a birthday party. He begins to climb towards the Col de Luens where a mechanic thinks he has seen him. Five hundred meters further on the road, six fossil merchants are installed for the day on the edge of the national. They say they never saw Mathieu pass. Within a few hundred meters, the child vanished.

Around the wooden table on the veranda, the couple dissects each of the last hours spent with Mathieu, on Saturday June 25, 1983. The day before his disappearance, in the evening, Philippe and he go to a ping-pong tournament in Castellana. The little boy then leaves to play with children of his age and is slow to return. The concern rises, until about thirty minutes later, Mathieu reappears. He was chatting with a guy who was cycling around Europe , says his father

On Sunday, a request for national broadcasting is transmitted by the gendarmerie. On Monday, a strong storm broke out in the region and forced the search to stop for three days. Still no trace of the child. We immediately knew that it was not a runaway, that it was something worrying, something serious , recalls Philippe Haulbert. The investigation is opened for the disappearance of a child. On July 1, information is opened for "kidnapping by fraud or violence of a minor under 15 years of age".

With the lack of clues, etc. (in this and, sadly, the missing toddler cases in France that are also currently being discussed here on WS), what pops into my mind as a possibility is something like the Fritzl case, where there is a perpetrator with a hidden cellar.

Complete speculation/MOO.

I hope I am very wrong. These are such heartbreaking cases and I cannot imagine the families' anguish as the days, then weeks, then years go by.

Do we know if they ever were able to identify the guy cycling around Europe ?
