Four inmates escaped custody from a jail in central Georgia on Monday, authorities said. One was being held on a murder charge.

The men, identified as 52-year-old Joey Fournier, 24-year-old Marc Kerry Anderson, 37-year-old Johnifer Dernard Barnwell and 29-year-old Chavis Demaryo Stokes, fled from the Bibb County Detention Center early Monday by climbing out of a damaged window in a day room and then passing through a cut fence. A blue Dodge Challenger pulled up to the spot and proceeded to help all four inmates escape at 3 a.m. ET. The jail is located in Macon, a city about 80 miles southeast of Atlanta.

The inmates made their way out of the Bibb County Detention Center through a damaged window and a cut fence, the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. They escaped about 3 a.m. in a blue Dodge Challenger that had pulled up to the location, the sheriff’s office said.

The Bibb County School District said it had placed its 38 schools on "soft lockdown," meaning classroom instruction continued but outdoor activities were limited during the day.

The Bibb County Sheriff's Office told 13WMAZ that U.S. Marshals tried to question a person of interest in the case this morning and were met with gunfire.

Someone fired shots through the door at them. They stepped back and waited for the SWAT team. The person shooting at them, according to the Bibb County Sheriff's Office was 23-year-old Christian Williams.

By the time Bibb's SWAT team entered the unit, they say, Williams had shot himself.
Sheriff David Davis believes Williams is connected to the four inmates who escaped.

"He is a person that, we feel, has knowledge of where they might be, that has knowledge of the escape, and who has some connection to at least one or two of the people we're looking for," Davis said.

Christian Williams was arrested two years ago. In March 2023, hours before he was set to stand trial, video appeared to show him being kidnapped.

“It is sort of suspicious that a person gets kidnapped under surveillance cameras on the day that they were supposed to appear in court,” Davis said earlier.

Court records show Williams no longer has a lawyer on the earlier charges and is listed as representing himself. A phone call and an email to his former lawyer were not immediately returned.

Officers on Monday arrested the woman at the apartment, Mykia Mynesha Williams, and charged her with aiding an escape, jail records show. It's unclear whether she's related to Christian Williams, or if she has a lawyer to speak for her, in part because a sheriff's investigator didn't return a phone call seeking information.

Video showed the Challenger just outside the jail on the night of the escape and appeared to show someone tampering with the fence. That person then brought some items into the enclosed area, and Davis has said investigators believe the items were used to help the men escape.

Joey Fournier, Marc Kerry Anderson, Johnifer Dernard Barnwell and Chavis Demaryo Stokes escaped out a jail window and through the fence.

Deputies found the Challenger abandoned Friday in the parking lot of a Macon supermarket. Jakaylen Williams is listed as living in an apartment two blocks away.

Jakaylen Williams is also charged with aiding the escape, although The Telegraph of Macon said warrants didn’t outline Williams’ role. Williams is also charged with violating probation, criminal trespass, battery and aggravated assault. Some of those charges stem from a March assault against a woman by Jakaylen Williams, investigators said.
