Police have spent nearly 30 years searching for answers in the mystery of a woman whose body was found in DeKalb County. Thanks to DNA technology, they've finally learned who she was.

''The DeKalb County District Attorney's Office says the remains of the woman, who was found in 1993, have finally been identified as 50-year-old Rebecca "Becky" Burke of Cobb County.

According to officials, on Sept. 17, 1993, Burke's body was found in the woods near what was then Quality Inn off of Northlake Parkway on the west side of Interstate 285. The body was discovered behind an electrical unit covered in pine straw and branches in what DeKalb County District Attorney Sherri Boston said seemed to be "deliberate."

It's odd that the article refers to her as a teen despite being 52 years old.

The fox article is confusing because they kept calling her a teen. It seems they originally thought it was the body of a younger woman than it turned out to be? Is that the reason for the confusion?

‘Do you know Becky Burke?’ DeKalb cold case victim identified after 30 years

A woman whose body was found 30 years ago in a wooded area behind an inn and a vacant doctor’s office in the Tucker area of DeKalb County now has a name, the district attorney’s office announced Wednesday.

''Investigators said Wednesday that the 52-year-old was last known to have lived in Cobb County, near the Marietta or Smyrna areas. Her family told investigators she may have also gone by the last names McChesney or Barnes.

Following an autopsy, medical examiners estimated Burke had died between two weeks and three months before she was found. Her cause of death is suspected to be blunt force trauma since she had sustained a traumatic injury to her face and a neck fracture that suggested pressure may have been applied to that area, according to Boston.''

''But investigators still need to learn what led to Burke’s death.

“Do you know Becky Burke, or did you interact with her in the days and months leading up to her death in the summer or early fall of 1993?” Boston asked. “Are you familiar with either the Fairfield Inn ... or the medical office that was vacant? ... Do you know anyone that might have worked or spent time at the Fairfield Inn during the summer and early fall of 1993?”

''The DA’s office and medical examiner’s office will hold a “DNA drive” on May 20, during which family members of missing people can attend, share information about their loved one and provide a DNA sample collected via a buccal swab. The drive will be held at the DeKalb County Public Library on Covington Highway.

The DA's office led the press conference and the DA indicated during the press conference her as being "15" (fifteen). It was only during follow-up questions that her age was corrected. My guess is the articles only followed the first 10 minutes of the press conference and didn't include the follow-up w/ corrections.

I've been looking for this lady's name a long time - so glad it is now known and how wonderful that her case was put forefront with the announcement of the grant to work on the 25+ Doe cases.

Officials stated Burke’s cold case dates back to Sept. 16, 1993, when her remains were found in a wooded area behind the Fairfield Inn at 2155 Ranchwood Drive (now the Quality Inn Northlake), and a vacant medical office at the intersection of Parklake Drive in the Tucker area. The body was found behind an electrical unit covered in pine straw and branches, which appeared to have been deliberately placed to conceal the remains, stated officials.

“The remains were in an advanced state of decomposition and the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office estimated that the woman had been deceased between two weeks and three months prior to being found,” stated officials. “She had sustained traumatic injury to the facial area, as well as a neck fracture that may indicate pressure having been applied to the neck. No identification was found near the body. However, the victim had extensive dental work, as well as a left hip replacement that may have caused an unusual gait.”
