  • ... Gail Eileen McCarthy was 23 years old and three months pregnant when she vanished on Nov. 14, 1971. She was on her way to work at the Misericordia Hospital where she was employed as a medical technician.

Wearing a brown coat with a white fur collar and white hospital stockings, the petite woman with brown eyes and short dirty blonde hair was last seen getting on a bus around 6:30 a.m. But she never made it work.

Her husband of five months, Ian McCarthy, reported Gail missing 11 hours after she left their basement apartment at 11820 124 St. to catch the bus a block away...

Originally from North Battleford, Sask., Gail moved to Edmonton about a year and a half before she disappeared. Her sisters remember her as a quiet, shy, introverted person who loved poetry, baking, and once aspired to be a nun.

The last time Dawson saw Gail was at her Edmonton apartment during a brief visit in September 1971.

“She was so happy because she had just found out she was pregnant,” said Dawson, who was 20 at the time. Ian, however, wanted Gail to have an abortion. “It was treated as a missing person case, but who walks off when they are three months pregnant and falls off the face of the earth?”

Gail’s disappearance left the family in disbelief, but as time passed by without any sign of their loved one, they began to fear the worst.

The family had suspicions that Ian was involved. He worked as a paratrooper for the military, said Dawson, adding she was petrified of him.

About a month after Gail disappeared, Ian gave all her stuff away. He drove to North Battleford and left a suitcase with Gail’s wedding dress outside her mother’s house without saying a word to anybody.

“I thought wow this is great. She’s home,” said Lesley Richard, who found the luggage when she came home from basketball practice. She was 16 at the time. “I have never seen such a look of disappointment when she (mom) saw that luggage and me.”

Police quickly ruled Ian out as a suspect. He hasn’t be in touch with the family since Gail disappeared.

Still searching for answers, Dawson and Richard recently went to a medium about their missing sister. The medium said Gail was in the passenger side of a light blue car and was murdered, her body dumped somewhere in Edmonton near water and a zoo. It was news the sisters found shocking.

With their father no longer alive and the health of their 90-year-old mother deteriorating, Dawson and Richard hope to find closure soon. Until then, the search for Gail will never end.

“She’s always there. You kind of hope that there will be closure,” said an emotional Richard from her home in Victoria, B.C. She still thinks about Gail daily.

“We don’t believe that she is still alive. We think that she is gone. We are just hopeful that one day we can learn what happened to her.”
