'A German police officer has gone on trial in eastern Germany accused of murdering a businessman whom he met on a website for cannibalism fetishists.'
Prosecutors say Detlev Guenzel, 56, strangled and dismembered 59-year-old Wojciech Stempniewicz, 59, from Hanover, last November at a guesthouse run by Mr Guenzel in Gimmlitztal, near Hartmannsdorf-Reichenau, south of Dresden.
In court in Dresden, Guenzel outlined his life story but avoided mentioning the actual night of the crime. His defence is that the victim died willingly and defence lawyer Endrik Wilhelm maintained the victim committed suicide by hanging himself. The coroner's report says the victim died from apshyxiation.
Guenzel's retracted the confession he made earlier where he said he stabbed the victim in the throat. There isn't any evidence he ate parts of the victim, but the victim was cut up with a chainsaw and buried in the yard of Gunzel's guest house in Reichenau and local reports say his genitals are still missing. He made a video to watch after:
'According to AFP, a graphic 50-minute video showing the dismemberment of the victim is to be presented during the trial. The footage reportedly shows a man in boxer shorts chopping up a man suspended from a hook, with his mouth taped shut and hands bound behind his back.'
'Wilhelm said the last scene of the video apparently shows Guenzel exclaiming: "I cannot believe what has just happened!" The lawyer added that while he harboured extreme fantasies, "he couldn't kill someone".'
Trial will continue September 1st. Guenzel faces a maximum of 15 years, even if he's found guilty.
