How is the media getting this so wrong. Is it less than 10 vehicles in the hangar or "hundreds" I'm going with the Globe, who are quoting Kavanagh, rather than the unnamed source of the Sun...

Toronto Sun
Sources say hundreds of vehicles have been found in a hangar.

Globe and Mail
“We’re still investigating, trying to find owners,” said Staff Sergeant Matt Kavanagh, who put the number of vehicles at “way less than 10”.

I wouldn't trust a word printed in the Sun actually.

I don't know if this has been brought up before, but I find it really strange that this bike was stolen months ago and chopped, but still it seems like most of the pieces are still around. Did these guys not have a market? Or did they only have a buyer for a couple of pieces? I don't understand how 'chop shops" operate at all, so if anyone wants to enlighten me....

I can't answer your question about the market, but more than "a couple of pieces" were missing when the bike was recovered.

"It has been chopped down big time, parts have been painted," Marty said. "There are lots of pieces missing and Hamilton Police have been fantastic in trying to find them all for me."

Thanks to that, he has three-quarters of the bike back now and is hopeful more of it will be found.

Good question. If we go with the theories that DM (and MS) wanted TB's truck for themselves (for whatever reason, be it hauling trailers to Baja or whatever), maybe it's not so much a chop shop as it is a "steal rare cars/trucks/bikes for our own amusement" shop. I believe the articles about the Harley and its trailer said that both had had identifying remarks removed, and that the trailer had been registered as a homemade trailer. I suppose if we knew who it had been registered to, it would give us a clue.

Edit: I completely forgot the bike had been broken down (to some extent) for parts till I saw Bessie's post. Hopefully I'm remembering the bit about the trailer being re-registered, going to go look.

Replying to myself:

Serial numbers had been shaved away and the trailer had already been registered as a homemade trailer within hours after the theft.

If LE knows to the hour when it was registered, it means they know who registered it. Would love to know who.

Hmm will all due respect they were the first to print about the harley in the first place.

This is true but IMO the way I read the story is that the reporter knew the owner of the bike and that is how I believe he got the scoop on him getting the bike back.

As far as how may vehicles found in the hanger I'm going with Kavanaugh. :moo:

IIRC, Det Kavanagh's background is in organized auto theft. He's probably well-versed in precisely what evidence is required to support a case.

What is your source for Det Sgt Kavanagh background 'in organized auto theft' ? This kind of specialization would be RCMP, not in provincial or city policing. Thanks.

Best,
J.

Can't find it now, but it was something I read about 2 weeks ago. Everybody has a background in something ;) Disregard it if you like .. I found it interesting.

FYI, "organized auto theft" or organized crime is certainly not limited to the purview of RCMP.

Probably because the other news media were fact checking and speaking to other sources they could identify in print. :twocents:

But wasn't Kavanagh on this case BEFORE it was suggested to be Organized Auto Theft I thought at first they assumed it was a random theft by two guys, one with tattoo and one with hoodie??

The owner of the Harley said he did not have the bike insured!!

Was it an expensive Harley, do you remember reading about it? I thought he had surveillance cameras on it that he gave to police? Do we know how long he had the bike?

Kavanagh's job in Hamilton's PD is described as 'case manager' in a homicide unit. The Bosma investigation was assigned to the homicide unit from the start, even before the body was found.

Best,
J.

Well, it was a 2010 Harley, doesn't say how long he actually had it. He listed it in the fall of 2012 it says. It says it was worth $35,000.00

The bike and trailer were taken from his back driveway in downtown Toronto in broad daylight last fall and witnesses reported seeing perhaps two men in a black truck back in and take it away.
It broke Marty's heart.

He managed to secure some surveillance video which he turned over to Toronto Police.

"Perhaps that tape will have some good information on it for the current investigation," Marty said. "I don't know if it was ever looked at."

The harley owner is considered a victim period. We do not speculate that victims are part of any criminal activity. You are allowed to discuss the Harley owner, you just can't consider him as part of any crime.
