CNN)At least two Honolulu police officers were killed in a shooting Sunday morning in the Diamond Head area, according to CNN affiliate Hawaii News Now.
The station reported the suspect in the shooting apparently set a home on fire on Hibiscus Drive.
Honolulu Police said the area of Hibiscus Drive was closed because of a police investigation. Video from Hawaii News Now showed several homes on that street engulfed in flames.
Honolulu's mayor and the state's governor confirmed the death of the two officers. CNN has not independently confirmed the details of the incident provided by Hawaii News Now.
One witness told Hawaii News Now he heard about 20 shots followed by several more after some time.

The Honolulu Police Department identified Tiffany Enriquez and Kaulike Kalama as the two officers killed in a Diamond Head neighborhood on Sunday. (Source: Police)

“On behalf of the men and women of the Honolulu Police Department, we extend our deepest condolences,” she said. “I knew each one of them very personally.”

The rampage rocked a state unaccustomed to violence and left many in disbelief.

“This is a family and people are grieving,” Mayor Kirk Caldwell told reporters.

Ballard identified the suspect as Jerry Hanel, and authorities believe he died when the home he was in went up in flames.

His remains have not yet been located, but Ballard said processing the scene could take days.

Court documents show Hanel has a history of erratic behavior and making false 911 reports. His attorney said he had delusions that he was being tracked by the FBI.

Ballard said he had no permits to own firearms.

Body camera footage that was filmed last year from the perspective of an unidentified officer shows that on at least one prior occasion, Officer Enriquez had responded to the Diamond Head home of Jerry Hanel, the suspect in Sunday’s killings.

The 69-year-old had a history of mental instability and disagreements with neighbors but was not prone to extreme violence, his lawyer told Hawaii News Now.

The two women are presumed dead. Long article with additional details of his history. Hanel lived there exchanging rent for work with the owner.

"... Police suspect Hanel, who was in his 60s, and two women who have not been identified were inside the house when it caught fire. They were presumed dead and Ballard said it could take days to recover the remains and process evidence.

The fire destroyed seven homes and left others damaged. As it raged, the sound of dozens of apparent gunshots rang out. ..."

Neighbor wanted Hawaii cop-killing suspect evicted years ago

“On Sunday morning, two neighbors said they heard piercing screams from the home and saw Hanel stabbing and beating another tenant of the residence with a three-pronged garden hoe, the Star-Advertiser reported.”

“Elklen Farmer Freeman and her husband, Russell Freeman, went next door and asked Hanel to stop. He threw the tool down but punched the woman until another neighbor, Jennifer Tema, intervened and the injured woman got away, the Freemans said.”

“The tenant told her neighbors that Cain was inside Hanel's apartment and in danger, said Tema, who went to the apartment and said she “heard him beating, bludgeoning someone."

“Police arrived and were met with a barrage of gunfire. Two officers were killed before the house was set on fire and the flames spread to several surrounding homes.”

 Horrifying. I'm speechless.
