Serial Killer Richard Cottingham's 1st Ever Interview + Serial Killer Elmer Wayne Henley Interview - YouTube

A fascinating 1st time interview with Richard Cottingham aka the torso killer.
Warning: graphic and disturbing, but telling. The guy now could pass as Santa Claus,, but during the interview, you get a glimpse of a proud psychopath peeking out.

Nice, a good example for bad journalism. Just to give some examples:

Cottingham, Henley and Langer are three entirely different psychopathologies. So it's like comparing apples, pears and plums. But okay, people in that field do it a lot.
Det. Mulligan from TX ... I was not sure whether to laugh or to cry. The police had, knowing the number of missing boys in one certein area of Houston, the so-called Heights, had doubled for then already two years, labeled all of those disappearances as "runaways" and refused any further investigation. One closer look and they would have found Henley (connected to six of the victims and seen last with at least two more) and a certain white van registered to Dean Corll. So, after Henley shot Corll (and in this incidence, not two boys but one boy and one girl was involved) and called the police, the detectives, especially Mulligan, believed no word about what Henley told them about Dean Corll a serial killer. It took Henley and Brooks, the other accomplice days to convince those detectives to get off their sorry rears and drive out with them to the boat shed. And whne they finally had bodies, all they realized fast was, they had screwed up with this "runaway" labels. So, knowing there had to be at least two or three more victims, they suddenly claimed, Henley and Brooks wouldn't be eligible for the death penalty, stroke a deal and shut down any further investigation, a process in which Det. M. was involved in a leading position. So, when he was all "I arrested the big bad serial killer", I felt some degree of headache. But then I had to grin, when he full of pride explained the "torture-board". Because when he saw it first, he had no idea what that was, Henley had to explain it to him ... and then again, because he didn't believe a word, Henley said.
Okay, and Mr. Harbort form Germany. Nice, he actually works for the police. But his degree is "Verwaltungsfachwirt". This is an academic degree for professional paper pushing, not criminology. Nevertheless, he brought Germany out of the stone age of profiling, even one can maybe discuss some of his methods (like the self fill in form to identify serial killers, derived basically from Hare's work). So, basically, what brought Harbort to serial killers was simply curiosity and he started out as an amateur. The kind of amateur, who got jumped by everybody because people felt all the time offended when he said something that contradicted popular believes. Well, nowadays, he is established of course, and that part of his past isn't mentioned anymore in TV and newspapers :floorlaugh: Still, in some ways, he is kind of the German version of Ressler and Douglas, who by the way were agents, also not especially psychological trained experts, but worked up to their level of expertise.
So, thanks for those videos, nice find. But take them with a grain of salt, please.

Peter,
I just watched the part about Cottingham. I am somehow related to his prosecutor. I also know one of the hotel workers who was working that day when he was arrested as well as one of the officers that responded. Any constructive criticism on that part of the video?

From the prosecution side and LE's side, it was a clean case, they did a good job. And actually, I found the journalistic side of the Cottingham part not as bad as the others. Cottingham is basically a garden variety psychopath who wanted to be someone. His murders were, as he said also clearly in the video (this is not the only source, I base my opinion on, though) an act of power and control gain. And the part about the lacerations was pretty good (the ME one), he was on the right track there. I wish only, those journalists making those videos could hold back on their "the mind of a monster" thing, underlined by music that is often rather annoying than heavy with meaning or scary, or whatever it is supposed to be. Can serial killers be treated, can serial killers be prevented, can serial killers be cured ... alone the idea to ask this question in generalized form shows off, that the guys who wrote that script didn't think enough. It'S like "the mind of a monster" ... err ... which kind of serial killer we are talking? Hedonistic, mission-driven/delusional, sadistic psychopath, garden variety narcissist, cultist-ish, maybe racial driven? Or maybe the classic greed killer, Angels of Death and/or House Cleaners? Anger assault tpyes who kill to silence what they perceive as the only victim? And so on, and so on, this is only a selection of the more common types of serial killers and the answer of the question above is different for each kind. So ... the journalism was kind of flat-bed-thinking. *** immitates Hannibal's voice ***: Fodder from the bottom feeders.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I have heard stories around the dinner table of how the prosecutor was determined to give every thing he got to nail Cottingham's arse, but to see him actually being interviewed and how he choked up when discussing one of the victim's sisters, really brought it home.

The common denominator for me with many of the various types of sk's is just how many of them can go around living "ordinary" lives, hold down good jobs, own homes, raise families, and generally blend into society as "normal" everyday individuals, while doing these truly horrific things and get away with it for as long as many of them do.

People think often about what I call "The FBI rubber stamp profile". You know, white guy between 15 and 150 years old, lives on welfare in his mother's basement because he can't hold a job. The interesting part is, this type exists. It is since long not the majority of serial killers and most of the time, those guys would dwell in the basement also without being serial killers because they are just too disturbed to live a normal life anyway. If you cut out the serial killer part, you find that type in the tens of thousands all over the country. So, technically, that is about as common an appearance under serial killers as under the general population. As I said, they aren't the majority. But, thanks to the rubber stampers in Hollywood and Quantico nowadays, it is what imprints the ideas, people have about serial killers and thus, people are always surprised to hear of a Poehlke, a Dr. Shipman, a Dennis Rader and so on. And as always, when it comes to that subject, I like to mention Countess Elizabeth Bathory. Not only was she a famous serial killer in a time,, the term wasn't even coined, she was also one of the brightest and best educated persons (also in comparison with the males) in her time. Bottom line: Things are not as simple as they are often told in this field.

And the prosecutor? Well, he did a good job, probably because he got angry about what he saw. Which lifts him classes over those clowns who had the case of the Hillside Stranglers initially. Or the guys who made the Corll case go away. We could use more of the kind, your relative was.

I've followed Heidi's case for awhile now. This article has me completely confused. According to her namus entry,Heidi was last seen in 1995. I get that her mother is saying now that that time frame is wrong, but this head was found in 1989? And they are just now identifying the remains as Heidi? What the heck am I missing here?

I wonder if law enforcement thinks that the LISK feels competitive with Rifkin and are releasing this info now to try to stir something up. I have a Google alert for "long island serial killer," and I'm sure the killer himself does too. The identification of this woman's remains got a ton of media attention, more than anything related to the LISK.

More than any recent stories related to the LISK, I mean.

Hi all! I haven't posted in a long time but I wanted to share this.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...ersonating-police-officer-lure-women-van.html

This is the guy from Jones Beach who faked his own death. He was driving around in a white van impersonating a police officer and trying to pick up women. I wonder if the police have looked into him possibly being the LISK?

Great reading you all again!

wm

He's a real "interesting" person...involved his own son, threatened his wife and son...I dug quite a bit into his story...but this is the first I have heard about the van. Time to revisit MR RR.

He has faked his own death. Probably faked psych issues to avoid being arrested and now he has faked being a police officer. I looked into RR, re: the LISK case and here are my original notes: (Dated August 2012) on Mr Roth:

"Well, it seems Mr Raymond Roth has ties to Massapequa, Jones Beach(specifically FIELD 6), NYC and Florida was fired from his job, his wife (not a first wife) has a Russian name, Evana, may have been abused by him and his son says he threatened him in recent emails."

http://online.wsj.com/article/AP4e7a...5141c5966.html

Wondering what Mr Roth may have done for a living before getting fired?

"A LinkedIn page for Roth said he worked for Level 3 Communications, a telecommunications company. A company spokesman declined to comment."

And there is more!!!
Nassau County Police said Friday that Roth recently had been required to surrender a handgun and his pistol license after a harassment complaint was filed against him in New York City. Details of the complaint were not immediately available.

Evana Roth said she knew nothing of the circumstances until police officers came to her home last month requesting the handgun and license.

"I couldn't tell you, he didn't talk to me, we didn't have that type of marriage," she said. "I only heard when cops showed up to take the license and pistol away."

http://massapequa.patch.com/articles...mails-and-plot
In this article it is interesting that he instructs his son to go to a payphone or borrow his friend's phone. "There needs to be a way to find out how things are going. Call me Sunday night at the resort," the first email said. "go to a pay phone or borrow your friends phone. You must call within 15 minutes of the determined time to call in order to be sure i will be available."

When the son came out and said that he had not seen these emails the father contacted the son and supposedly said abusive things about his manhood and that, in summary, one of them was going to die. "

Jon Roth also told the New York Post that he received a threatening voice mail from his father saying: “Still not a man, huh, Jonathan? Can’t even answer your own phone . . . Listen, tough guy. You say you’ve been to the Marines and you can kill and everything else. When I get back, you are gonna do just that. One of us is going to die.”

Now, August 2012, it seems Mr Roth and his son's whereabouts are unknown. According to the NY Post, the son is in hiding. The father hasn't been heard from since Friday when he "drunk called" his wife.

Originally, Roth was "...feared lost after authorities spent days searching the waters off Jones Beach’s Field 6,"

And there is more: He was born in 1964...he is 48 years old and per his son

"The son also couldn’t explain why his father, whom he described as an abusive alcoholic, would be mad enough to make threats.

The wife's lawyer says he broke Evana's nose once. And in another article says he "persuaded her to sign over her home, which was in her name only, to him.

Last thing about Mr Roth: Level3 Communications is headquartered in the Murray Hill section of Manhattan. Wiki (I know...I'll get a better source) describes Murray Hill:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murray_Hill,_Manhattan
"Frank P. Vardy, the demographer for the City Planning Commission, said that the traditional boundary is within East 34th Street, East 40th Street, Madison Avenue, and Third Avenue. The neighborhood is part of Manhattan Community Board 6."

Level 3 network will be installed in the boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx and Queens. Additionally, the company has begun providing select telecommunications services in the New York metropolitan area, as part of its national city roll-out.

Per Intelius: He is 47 (one listing says 48):
Raymond J Roth
Raymond J Ruth
Massapequa, NY
North Bellmore, NY
Merrick, NY
Thanks Nugster, some articles make it appear as if LE doesn't know exactly where he is but this is also very interesting from the NYT's article:
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/05/ny...e&ref=nyregion

"In a news conference on Friday, Ms. Roth described her husband as a verbally abusive alcoholic. She said she did not know why he tried to fake his death, though she said he was fired on July 20, shortly after he had threatened to shoot two supervisors.

Mr. Roth turned over a licensed gun he owned on July 21, after a police inquiry.

Mr. Leeds said Ms. Roth had given away four other firearms that Mr. Roth had owned. He said Ms. Roth would seek a divorce and attempt to regain full ownership of the family’s home. She said that Mr. Roth had coerced her into transferring the home into both their names in April."

and this:"Detective Thomas Duignan of the New York State Park Police ...confirmed Roth, an unemployed telecommunications manager from Massapequa, had returned to New York but could not give further details."

FYI. From News 12 Long Island.

WOODBURY - A Massapequa man who faked his own death last year has been arrested for allegedly posing as a police officer and attempting to kidnap women.

Police say 48-year-old Raymond Roth posed as an officer at least twice this month and once last month. They say Roth chased a 38-year-old woman into PLS check cashing office in Freeport after she refused to get in his van.

During a news conference this afternoon, police say viewers who saw surveillance video on News 12 Long Island identified the person as Roth.

Hours later, Roth pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit insurance fraud for faking his own death at Jones Beach last summer.

Roth has been charged with attempted kidnapping, criminal impersonation and attempted burglary and was remanded without bail. He faces up to 23 years in prison if convicted.

That bit about "hours later" pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, etc is confusing. Hours after what, being seen on T.V. or trying to abduct the women via impersonating a police officer? Another poorly written piece.

Well, this is more clear:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/...arrested-impersonating-officer_n_2972845.html

March 21st he plead guilty to the conspiracy charges and later that same day he tried to abduct the woman.

The article also says, "Raymond Roth, 48, of Long Beach, was held without bail following a court appearance in Hempstead on Thursday in which he pleaded not guilty to charges of criminal impersonation, attempted kidnapping and attempted burglary."

Once again, his attorney is trying to claim psych issues. What a boatload of ....

http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2013/03...s-own-death-has-now-been-impersonating-a-cop/

"Roth was not serving his jail time when he was allegedly caught pretending to being a police officer, because he convinced a judge to delay his 90-day sentence so he could finish culinary school.

Roth’s attorney claimed his client was depressed and needs help."

It is getting old...these light sentences really send the wrong message. Meanwhile his possibly abused son faces several years in prison!

He's a real "interesting" person...involved his own son, threatened his wife and son...I dug quite a bit into his story...but this is the first I have heard about the van. Time to revisit MR RR.

I agree 100%. I researched him too for a minute when I heard about the fake drowning off Jones Beach. I also thought the suspect that tried to kidnap a woman and claimed he was LE (who ran into check cashing place) was "interesting." Now that the two are connected (and a "white van" to boot - wow. I really like him as a suspect. This may be the guy!!! Thanks JK and WM!

A few quick observations:

Manhattan - LI connection is there (and holy cow - Massapequa???!!!)
Check.
He broke his current wife's nose?!
Check. And Bingo! A physical abuser for sure. (We have a Jane Doe with a prior broken nose)!!!
Check.
Abusive (and drunk) in phone calls.
Check.
Alcoholic per family.
Check.
Age fits my (and others') profile.
Check.
Manager at a telecommunications company. (OMG)!
Check.

I'm kind of stunned he fits so well. I think we should start a thread...guess I'll try lol!

There have been several people who have been arrested over the past few years for impersonating a PO. Its happens mostly in Nassau CO on or near the area of Hempstead Turnpike. In the area of the Queens boarder.

Just K and Waltzingmathilda should IMO get credit for this find...I just can't figure out how to move the posts to the new thread I started. I put the thread in "Crimes...". I'd like to move it now to LISK forum but not sure how to do that!
