(CNN)With 200-mph sustained winds and even more powerful gusts, Hurricane Patricia is the strongest hurricane ever recorded by the U.S. National Hurricane Center and it's barreling toward Mexico's Pacific coast Friday.

The Miami-based meteorological center, in its 8 a.m. advisory, warned of a "potentially catastrophic landfall in southwestern Mexico" later Friday. While its strength could fluctuate, "Patricia is expected to remain an extremely dangerous Category 5 hurricane through landfall."

Patricia has potential to cause massive death and destruction for a large swath of the Mexican Pacific coast, including the tourist hot spots of Puerto Vallarta and Acapulco.

That thing is a beast. I feel so worried and sad for the people of Mexico, the animals to..

Ive been so lucky and blessed as Ive traveled there a few times...

Im following this closely..I live in Texas, gulf coast, spitting distance from Galveston island , rode out my share of hurricanes, but I tell ya, this one is frightening.

Hubby and I have been looking at maps of Puerta Vallarta trying to figure out where a quarter of a million residents can flee to?
The area is surrounded by mountains.
I'll never forget taking a bus from the airport to town. Scary dangerous roads.

I hope Mexico is doing all it can to get it's citizens to a safe place. This is a bad one.

Just press "Hide Chat" for your own sanity if you go to YouTube itself.

Praying for your family bluesneakers and all those in the path of this monster!

Sending prayers to your family blue sneakers. Please keep us updated how she is doing.

Thank you!

She last checked in a few hours ago to say she'd taken groceries to people when she was stocking up for herself. That's just what kind of person she is. :) She's charged everything and is staying home waiting for it to be over. She lives on a hill and they trimmed all the trees near the house. I never would have thought to do that!

I've been watching this for about five minutes and it's crazy and frightening how quickly things change. The sky has gone dark and the waves have doubled in size.

Mexico hunkers down for Patricia, 'the most dangerous storm in history'

"(CNN)Patricia -- the strongest hurricane ever recorded -- barreled closer and closer Friday to Mexico's Pacific coast, where residents have been told to brace for its 200-mph sustained winds and torrential rains.

The excessive wind speeds, according to the head of the Mexican agency that includes its national weather service, "makes Patricia the most dangerous storm in history."

"MONTERREY, Mexico — Tens of thousands of people were being evacuated Friday from Mexico's Pacific coast as the strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Western Hemisphere bore down on the popular tourist area packing sustained winds of 190 mph, down from 200 mph earlier in the day.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center predicted the Category 5 Hurricane Patricia would make a "potentially catastrophic landfall" in southwestern Mexico later in the day."

Catastrophic Landfall Expected Soon in Mexico; Patricia Becomes Strongest Hurricane Ever Recorded

"A potentially catastrophic landfall is expected Friday evening as a very powerful and dangerous Hurricane Patricia moves towards Mexico's Pacific coast. Hurricane Patricia became the most powerful tropical cyclone ever measured in the Western Hemisphere on Friday morning as its maximum sustained winds reached an unprecedented 200 mph (320 kph).

The hurricane is forecast to make landfall in the Mexican state of Jalisco Friday evening as a catastrophic Category 5 hurricane capable of causing widespread destruction. Residents and authorities in Mexico are rushing to prepare for what will likely be the strongest hurricane to ever make landfall on that country's Pacific coastline."

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Hurricane Patricia was the strongest storm ever recorded in the Western Hemisphere, and the World Meteorological Organization compared it to 2013's Typhoon Haiyan, which killed thousands in the Philippines.

Pena Nieto said it was hard to predict what would be done by the massive storm, which could be seen from outer space.

"But one thing we're certain of is that we're facing a hurricane of a scale we've never ever seen," he said in a local radio interview shortly before U.S. President Barack Obama said the United States was standing by ready to help Mexico.

Both Mexican and U.S. officials said the unprecedented hurricane could wreak catastrophic damage.
