Students say murdered Spanish teacher, student argued over grades

11/5/21

Sawyer Mast took her class last year.

"Not all of us liked Spanish two or three," Mast said. "It was a hard class. But she was, in reality, probably one of the best teachers we had because she held you to her standards, and that was good for her."

He's one of several students KCCI spoke to who knew Graber and the two students now charged with her murder: Jeremy Goodale, 16, and Willard "Chaiden" Miller, 16.

"Having known Chaiden, having him in my class, he did speak, not in a murderous way, but in a very aggressive way for dislike toward Ms. Graber," Mast said.

A couple of students told KCCI they heard an argument Tuesday afternoon about trying to get a grade up in Graber's class. Not long after that, police said that same student went to Chautauqua Park where Graber was known to go for walks.

According to court documents, Goodale posted details about planning the killing and a possible motive on social media. Police said they found clothing that appeared to have blood at the homes of the teens.

Court documents state Miller admitted to being at the park with Garber was killed and helped to conceal her death.

Assistant Jefferson County Attorney Patrick J. McAvan said Friday that many people are asking if this is a racially motivated crime. “We do not have any evidence at this point that suggests that,” he said.

Authorities have not released a motive.

Judge to issue written rulings on bond reduction requests for teens charged in Fairfield teacher’s death

11/23/21

FAIRFIELD, Iowa (KWQC) - A judge Tuesday said he will take under advisement a request to reduce the $1 million cash bond of two 16-year-olds charged in the death of a Fairfield Spanish teacher earlier this month.

District Court Judge Joel Yates said he anticipates filing a written ruling sometime next week following short bond review hearings for Jeremy Everett Goodale and Willard Noble Chaiden Miller in Jefferson County District Court.

“I want to consider what each side has told me here today, [and I] want to review the file,” the judge said during a hearing for Goodale.

The teens are charged as adults with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit a forcible felony in the death of 66-year-old Nohema Graber. They will be arraigned on the charges Monday.

Arrest affidavits revealed that social media exchanges showed Goodale had knowledge of Graber’s disappearance and death.

They also included information about plans to kill Graber.

Graber was last seen in the area of Chautauqua Park on Nov. 2. Graber frequently went for walks at that park, according to the affidavits.

Her family reported her missing on the morning of Nov. 3.

Later that day, police found her body in the park hidden under a tarp, wheelbarrow, and railroad ties. According to the affidavits, the initial investigation indicated Graber suffered “inflicted trauma” to the head.

Judge Joel Yates proved to be very patient and fair during the trial of CBR for Mollie Tibbetts murder and I'm pleased for Nohema Graber's children that he will be overseeing the trial of the students accused of murdering their mother.

I don't think a kid randomly wakes up one day and plots to, and then murders their teacher without some predictive behavior throughout their life.

I could be wrong of course, but I'd like to better understand these two, and understand how they got to this place.

Some severe perpatrators dont show red flag warning signs.

For example, these two teens accused of double murder in the course of a very badly conceived robbery did not display warning signs either. In contrast, the presumed leader had been identified as having good potential.

In the end, sometimes two perpetrators can "feed off each other" and commit horrific crimes that neither would commit if required to act alone. Mob violence works the same way as each perpetrator can be either directly or indirectly encouraged by others to commit acts that they would not have done individually.

Likewise, perpertrators can also be seeking to please or impress the other participant in regards to a criminal duo, or group of perpetrators in regards to mobs.

Iowa murder suspects plead not guilty in teacher's death | weareiowa.com

11/29/21

Two southeast Iowa teenagers charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in the death of their high school Spanish teacher have pleaded not guilty.

Willard Miller and Jeremy Goodale are accused of killing Nohema Graber in Fairfield earlier this month.

In the arraignment documents filed Monday, Miller and Goodale also waived their right to a speedy trial, which means prosecutors are not required to try them within 90 days of formal charges being filed Nov. 12.

The 16-year-olds are awaiting a judge's decision on whether their $1 million bond will be reduced to give them a chance for release before trial.

Pretrial conferences for the suspects are scheduled for March 21 with trials scheduled for April 19 in Jefferson County.

Fairfield teens accused of murdering Spanish teacher plead not guilty

Nohema Graber, 66 of Fairfield, was reported missing November 3 before she was found dead later in the day at Chautauqua Park.

Jeremy Goodale and Willard Miller were charged in her death and were both scheduled to be in court Monday but both opted to file a written plea of not guilty instead.

Both suspects also asked Judge Joel Yates to lower their $1 million last week. Yates said he will likely issue a ruling on that this week.

Defense attorneys for both teens argued they are not flight risks but prosecutors asked for the bond to be raised to $2 million.

Jury trials are scheduled for April 19, 2022 for both suspects.

Great insights! Thank you. Your comments reminded me of the two english girls from the late 50's, early 60's who murdered. Can't remember their names. Famous case of murder and folie a deux.

I think Mary Bell and Norma Bell (not related to each other).
Or maybe Pauline Parker and Juliet Hulme (aka Anne Perry) ?
Murdered Pauline's mother, Honora Rieper.

Wonder if one of Nohema's killers was inspired by the other ?
Still, no excuse as we all have a choice.

Is it possible that if N.G's murderers claim a botched robbery that they think they'll have a lighter sentence than a homicide inspired by anger over failing grades ?

What a completely idiotic reason to kill over and throw away their lives.
Hoping they're both sentenced to the maximum allowed.

From reading other cases here at WS, beating (if she was beaten to death) is an up close and personal way to kill, much like stabbing.
So much rage inflicted on this poor woman !
Imo.

While very little information has been released to the public, it was clear how horrendous this crime was from DA Brown's statements last week during the bond inquiry.

Brown requested the court raise their bonds from $1M to $2M due to the brutality they allegedly inflicted on the victim post-death. (Defendants were seeking lower bond conditions). As if it was not bad enough to end NG's life, the violence towards the victim after she was deceased was frightening. IMO, this attack was very personal.

Teen charged as adult in death of Iowa Spanish teacher seeks trial as juvenile

12/10/21

[..]

If convicted as a juvenile, the teen could be released in less than 24 months, something prosecutors said would not serve the interests of the community or the suspect.

[..]

Attorney Christine Branstad on Wednesday filed documents asking the judge to transfer the teen’s case to juvenile court, saying he was 16 at the time of the alleged acts.

He “has no prior juvenile court or district court involvement,” she said. She requested a report from juvenile court services be ordered and that the judge set a hearing to determine whether the case should be transferred to juvenile court.

Jefferson County Attorney Chauncey Moulding responded in court documents that state law allows the exclusion from juvenile court of suspects 16 years or older accused of a serious felony, unless good cause is shown.

“Because of the nature of the allegations, the undersigned argues there could be no reasonable prospects for rehabilitating the child in the juvenile court system before the defendant turns 18 and ‘ages out’ of that system. Such an outcome would be outside the interests of the juvenile and the community at large,” he said. “The state believes there is no reasonable prospect of rehabilitating a premeditated murderer in less than 24 months.”

He said the state does not oppose a report being prepared by a juvenile court officer.

^^rsbbm

And now Willard Noble Chaiden Miller wants to be tried as a juvie, and be released at age 18 or in less than 24 months. Think NOT!

I have confidence in Judge Joel Yates that this will not happen.

Appears to me that defendant Willard Miller, represented by Attorney Christine Branstad, has been busy getting his court videos pulled from local networks in addition to seeking to move him to juvenile court. IMO, Miller is def the individual with more resources and family than his co-defendant. MOO
