Greenlander Thomas Møller Olsen has been sentenced to 19 years in prison for the murder of Birna Brjánsdóttir, as well as the attempted smuggle of 20 kg of hashish. The judgment was rendered in the district court of Reykjanes, South Iceland.

Olsen will also have to pay Birna's parents approximately 29 million krona ($ 271917.49) in legal costs and settlement. It is currently unclear whether the case will be appealed to the Supreme Court.

JUSTICE for BIRNA! :rose:

19 years? I feel so bad for her parents.

Try to keep in the context of Iceland - 20 years is equivalent to life imprisonment as they strive for rehabilitation - it may also be due to him being a foreigner, I'm not sure. There have been murderers with as few as 4 year sentences! Here is some info:

https://www.theguardian.com/news/2018/apr/12/the-murder-that-shook-iceland

In a country with one of the lowest murder rates in the world, the killing of a 20-year-old woman upended the nation’s sense of itself.

I had the pleasure of visiting Reykjavík last year and it was such a friendly city, that I can see why people felt safe walking home at night. I can see how the murder must have shocked so many people, it's not a city which you would associate with crime.
