Kiiwiih.....thanks so much for your constant updates....they are much appreciated!

Not a problem. There is nothing else on my mind except Birna and the fact that she has to be found. I am going to try to sleep tonight though. I've been falling asleep at 6 am since Monday because I've been so worried and I can't keep functioning like that. I woke up Monday feeling like she had been found safe because I dreamt it and since then it's been difficult going to sleep.

Following this heart-breaking thread....and however small the chance, I am hoping she is found and is okay. What a beautiful young girl.

I love Iceland. We have been many, many times. And while violence can happen anywhere, it is not a place that I associate with crime and violence.

The live feed sure looks windy....

Downtown Reykjavik. Christmas.

Gorgeous photo Wish I Knew - thanks.....Iceland looks so beautiful!

I am not seeing any updates on birna yet. Trying to be patient.....

Nothing has yet appeared in the extensive investigation on the disappearance of Birna Brjánsdóttir to shed light on where she is. Three crew members of the Polar Nanoq trawler were arrested yesterday and police have demanded that they remain in police custody.

Police will not disclose whether the men have spoken about Birna at all, or whether any clues to her disappearance were found on board the Greenlandic trawler. Neither can they disclose any information about the red Kia car which they rented and is also being checked for evidence.

The three men will go before a hearing at the District Court today for a ruling of police custody.

According to news in Icelandic two of the men, the ones arrested around noon yesterday, will be remaining in police custody. Nothing has apparently been decided about the third man that was arrested last night but the police still have about 9 hours to decide what they need to do before he's released, since they can only detain him in for 24 hours without getting an official detention warrant from a judge.

I still can't believe this is happening. If this turns out to be an abduction it will be the first time in my country's history that it happens to a woman.

What a tragic case.
I holding out hope shes somewhere in that ship. Alive.
I wonder what they did with this poor girl.

Marking my spot to see what happens and although it's not looking so good right now, I am hoping that somehow Birna is found safe.

kiiwiih we are here with you! :grouphug:

According to forensic reports on the red Kia Rio that police have in their possession, a crime was committed there. The police have not commented so what the news are reporting is unsubstantiated but they say they have credible sources.

One of the men arrested went in front of a judge today and was detained for a further two weeks. The police wanted to detain him for four weeks and have appealed to the supreme court.

I'll post links in English as soon as they've been published.

Police also say they have found evidence of criminal activity within a red Kia Rio rented by one of the crew members.

All three men are in custody as suspects; not as witnesses.

mid-morning update:

The search continues on Reykjanes peninsula today. The area is covered with snow, making search efforts difficult. Car lights were seen in the area Saturday morning, giving police reason to have it thoroughly searched

The next few days will involve searching a large area, extending from Hafnarfjörður to Reykjanes peninsula, in addition to Heiðmörk. If today’s search is not successful, a major search would be conducted this weekend.

The divers, who have searched Hafnarfjörður harbor in recent days, will be given time off to rest today, although they will be on stand-by if something new comes up.

Ooh no. Another girl lost. But why? I know theres really never a reason, still i dont understand the not understood. Sorry. So sad for this girl and her family.

Oh I agree.
It never seems to end does it?

Did they think they could abduct and kill/hurt a woman, leave port and be Scott free? There docking records for the whole year should be checked against any missing women in their port of calls

The ship was thoroughly scrutinized by the technical and scientific police, but police sources quoted by the Icelandic press doubt that the young woman was carried on board.

Some interesting facts about Iceland:

Crime, and a fortiori blood crimes, are so rare in Iceland that it was not until December 2013 that for the first time in its history the police shot a man, wounding him mortally.

A country of 330,000 inhabitants, Iceland has experienced an average of 1.8 homicides per year, according to police statistics. They often involve alcoholic, or unbalanced authors.

2002 was particularly fatal (four homicides) whereas 2003, 2006 or 2008 recorded neither murder nor murder.
