Odd case. I can find little information and cannot even find marriage records and maiden name. The one interesting thing is two separate pieces of information on different sites (which I will not link as they are not of the sort allowed). One site states that her mother was remarrying in the July and, around that time, hired a PI to look for her. The second site records that a wire tap on her mothers phone was discovered (accidentally by a telephone service worker) some months after the disappearance. It does beg the question as to whether someone involved wanted to know of any progress by the mothers investigators. And if that was the case, it points to someone close to the family.

Details of Disappearance
Catherine had an argument with her husband of six years, Robert Runte, in their home in the 900 block of Sanborn Drive in Spinnakers Cove subdivision of Palatine, Illinois at 12:30 a.m. on May 22, 1979.

A photo of Robert is posted with this case summary. He stated Catherine scratched him, kicked him in the jaw and broke it, and slashed his hand with a kitchen knife, then ran away from the house. She has never been heard from again.

She was carrying only her purse, credit cards and a small amount of cash at the time of her disappearance, and Robert stopped her from taking the car. He believed she had gone away to calm down and would return within hours, but she never did and has never been heard from again.

Robert stated Catherine had mental problems and was afraid of being hospitalized, but her family and coworkers said she was in good spirits at the time of her disappearance and was looking forward to her mother's upcoming second marriage.

She was employed part-time as an interior designer for Cathy Metzler Interiors in Barrington, Illinois in 1979, and apparently liked her job. She also gave tennis lessons.

Eight months prior to Catherine's disappearance, a man and a woman armed with pistols forced their way into her home, handcuffed her to a beam in the basement, ransacked the house for several hours and stole more than $5,000 worth of jewelry. They left without harming Catherine, and her stepdaughter found her when she got home from school.

The burglars were never caught. It is uncertain whether the home invasion is related to Catherine's later disappearance.

After Catherine's disappearance, Robert divorced her on grounds of desertion and moved to Florida.

Before he left Illinois, he filed for bankruptcy for his coin-operated games manufacturing business, which was $200,000 in debt. In 1984, he was pleaded guilty to conspiracy to sell stolen goods across state lines; he had attempted to sell $350,000 worth of art that had been stolen in 1981.

None of the credit cards Catherine took with her were used after she went missing, and area taxi drivers all denied having given her a ride that day. She had previously left her husband for periods ranging from a few hours to several days, but always kept her family informed of her whereabouts and always returned home eventually.

None of Catherine's loved ones have heard from her since 1979. Authorities believe she is probably dead. Robert is considered a possible suspect in her disappearance, but he has never been charged.

Another resident of Spinnakers Cove, Stephanie Lyng, disappeared in 1977. Her husband was later convicted of her murder, but Lyng's body was never found. Catherine's disappearance is not believed to be connected to Lyng's presumed murder. Catherine's case remains unsolved.

Andy Blazkovec - Newspapers.com shows a clipping of a book review. The book is by an investigator called Signe West Gallagher who includes a section about her investigation into Catherine Runte's disappearance after she was retained by Robert Runte (this is what the review says although elsewhere I have seen it said it was Catherine's mother who employed the investigator). The clipping states that Gallagher was convinced Runte killed his wife and dumped her in a lake. The book is called 'Time to Tell' and if anyone has a copy they may be able to add more facts to this case.

Runte was clearly a complete crook. The 1984 case where he served time for trying to sell stolen art also involved him having stolen the art himself in 1981 from an office he had let. The Palm Beach Post from West Palm Beach, Florida on September 29, 1984 · Page 23 (newspapers.com) includes a report on the case (click on OCR for text) and names his co-defendants as Sam Loria and Robert Mann. This case was part of an FBI operation and Don Arrest - Newspapers.com gives a lot more names of those involved in the wider operation. Oddly the latter report did not name Runte, but presumably he was picked up later. Interestingly some of those names (Joseph Balzano for example) are known mob associates.

As an aside, one of the other named parties, James (Jimmy the Beard) Ferrozzo, who was also clearly part of organised crime, is best remembered for his bizarre death a year after these arrests - see A couple engaged in sex atop a nightclub piano... - UPI Archives.

Runte's record and associates seem pretty heavy circumstantial evidence of - at least - his capability for having murdered his wife.

Catherine's husband was Robert Ralph Runte, born in Wisconsin in 1931 and died February 2021 in Florida. This is all from various Ancestry trees and I attach his obituary from one of those trees (with photo which confirms he is the same man as the photo in #5 above. Interestingly the obituary talks of his meeting his wife in 1980 (the year after Catherine disappeared) but makes no mention of Catherine (or his various legal problems). However, Catherine does appear on the Ancestry trees. As well as his 1980s legal problems I suspect he had earlier ones and a quick temper. At St. Cloud Times from Saint Cloud, Minnesota on August 26, 1959 · Page 18 (newspapers.com) there is a report of Robert Runte being arrested for shooting out the tyre of a motorist who annoyed him. I cannot find any other Robert Runte who fits the date and location. He seems to have continued sailing close to the wind in later years as a civil case at United States v. Greeting Card, 0:00-cv-06212 – CourtListener.com shows.
But if he was responsible he is now beyond reach.

Apologies. I failed to attach the obituary to my previous message.
