Officers on Thursday arrested the former boyfriend of a woman who was among four people, including an infant, found shot to death in a Belleville apartment, a police official said.

Officers found the bodies of the baby boy, who was in an infant seat, two women and a man Wednesday night after neighbors called police about 8:20 p.m. to report a burglary in progress.

Venable identified the victims as 2-month-old Jason Smith, 19-year-old Nicole Willyard, 19-year-old Mary Cawvey, and 23-year-old Brandon Lobell of Belleville. He said the women and the baby lived in the apartment, but it was unclear which of them was the infant's mother. He did not know Lobell's relationship to the others.

Venable said the man who was arrested "had a past boyfriend-girlfriend relationship" with one of the women who was killed and is considered a suspect in the deaths. http://www.nbc5.com/news/5064744/detail.html?z=dp&dpswid=2265994&dppid=65192

No jail too evil for the man who did this. Just to be sure, all of the >250 lb. linebacker style inmates need to know that the perp 12-guaged a 3 month old, then let them alone with him for a while.

A man charged with four counts of first-degree murder for allegedly using a shotgun to kill an ex-girlfriend, her baby and two acquaintances with a speed that astounded investigators sobbed as a judge entered a not guilty plea on his behalf Friday.

Jason D. Smith, 28, of Dupo, said nothing during his brief arraignment, when St. Clair County Associate Judge Brian Babka ordered that he be assigned a public defender. Smith continued crying as he was led away in shackles to jail, his bond set at $4 million earlier in the day.

28-year-old Jason D. Smith of Dupo apologized as he was led from his arrangement. "Sorry," he told reporters. Smith had been in tears as he was arraigned on four counts of first-degree murder. An automatic not guilty plea was entered for him.

Smith is accused of killing 4 people in a Belleville apartment. Police believe jealousy or revenge led to the murders.

19-year-old Mary Cawvey and 23-year-old Brandon Lovell were killed in the shootings. So were 19-year-old Nicole Willyard of Dupo and her young son, a 9-week-old child also named Jason Smith. It is not clear if the suspected shooter was the father of the child. All four were killed by shotgun blasts.

Wharton said he had no legal alternative but to impose four simultaneous life terms without the chance of parole in the 2005 killings, which prosecutors called a "slaughter." The sentence mirrored the recommendation of jurors, who rejected prosecutors' requests to impose the death penalty...

Prosecutors had described Smith as a man on a mission of destruction on Oct. 5, 2005, when he broke out the apartment window... Attorneys said Smith knew well before the shootings that the baby boy was not his, though prosecutors said the motive for the killings remained unclear.

Each victim was shot once in the head, authorities said. The women were hit twice, Lovell three times. The baby was still in his car seat. Smith fired at least eight shots, apparently reloading three times, authorities said.
