Evidence from boat possibly linked to Trudy Appleby is in the FBI’s hands, 23 years after her disappearance (with clip)

AUGUST 21, 2019

"MOLINE, Illinois – August 21, 2019 is the 23rd anniversary of Trudy Appleby vanishing from her home in East Moline when she was 11-years-old back in 1996....

Moline Police say they’re getting closer to answers as the FBI investigates what could be a key piece of evidence tied to the prime suspect in the case, William “Ed” Smith, who died back in 2014....

In December 2018, Moline Police uncovered a boat they believe could be involved with Trudy’s disappearance. The boat is currently being swabbed at the FBI laboratory in Quantico where hundreds of swabs are being tested for DNA to compare samples later.

Moline Police partnered with University of North Texas several years ago to get a DNA sample for Appleby. The sample is based off her mom, dad, and brother’s DNA and is what they will look at once they receive the results from Quantico.

A date when Moline Police will receive results has not been determined.

“So, we have a known DNA for Trudy that we will match with the DNA evidence that we will find,” Griffin explains...."

On Wednesday, Moline police named David L. Whipple, 59, of Colona, and Jamison A. “Jamie” Fisher, 45, of Silvis, as persons of interest in the investigation into the disappearance of Trudy Appleby.(KWQC/Moline Police Department)
It's stunning that David Whipple is only now being named a person of interest; that should have happened years ago.

In 2017, Moline police said a witness saw Trudy with Smith in a silver Chevrolet near his residence on Campbell's Island on Aug. 21, 1996. Police believe Smith took her boating before she disappeared.

In 2019, police tracked down Smith's boat in Dubuque, Iowa and took it into custody for evidence.

"On the last set of buckle swabs there was a promising swab obtained," Griffin said. "We're continuing to investigate that and I can say that Mr. Whipple and Mr. Fisher are intertwined with the boat investigation."

ETA - I cannot find anywhere that says this is Campbell's Island, but I asked my mom where these pictures are taken and she thinks it's there. It's definitely not at the East Moline property that was recently searched, IMO.

Earlier this year, Moline police announced a new development in another cold case, the disappearance of Trudy Appleby.

On Aug. 21, 1996, the 11-year-old was reported missing by her father, Dennis, from their home in Moline. On the days leading up to Trudy’s disappearance, she had asked her father to go spend time with a friend who resided on Campbell’s Island.

Appleby’s father did not allow her to go swimming, but phone records show she may have planned to go ahead with her swimming plans.

In August 2017, police released information that a witness observed Appleby with William “Ed” Smith in a late model silver Chevrolet 4-door near Smith’s residence on Campbell’s Island on Aug. 21, 1996, and listed him as a person of interest in the case.

On Aug. 19, police named two more persons of interest in the investigation - David L. Whipple, 60, of Colona, and Jamison A. “Jamie” Fisher, 45, of Silvis.

“So whether it’s 24 years later, Trudy Appleby, or it’s four years down the road, 28 years later, every day in between, we’re going to continue to pursue justice in that case and every case of where we have a victim of a homicide in Moline,” Griffin said in a recent interview with TV6.

Updated today: Trudy Leann Appleby – The Charley Project

If Trudy was friends with the Whipple children and often went on the water with this group, I'm wondering why her dad said she couldn't go on this particular date? Was she being grounded or something, or was there some other reason dad didn't want her with them?

Details of Disappearance
Trudy's father departed from their family's residence to report to work at approximately 9:00 a.m. on August 21, 1996 in Moline, Illinois. A neighbor saw Trudy enter a silver or gray four-door box-style vehicle, similar to a Chevrolet Celebrity, in the driveway of her home between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m.

The driver of the vehicle is described as being Caucasian and in his twenties at the time with curly brown or black hair worn long to his shoulders. The suspect was wearing a baseball cap. Neither Trudy nor her suspected abductor have been seen again. Her father reported her disappearance when he could not find her after he returned home from work.

Authorities believe that Trudy may have known the vehicle's driver. Her family's residence was located off of the main road and was not visible from the street. Her case was initially investigated as a possible runaway, but investigators now believe Trudy was abducted. She took a swimsuit and a towel before departing from her home. She left approximately $200 behind, which her father said she saved for an upcoming vacation.

William "Ed" Smith was identified as the prime suspect in Trudy's disappearance in 2017. Smith, a friend of Trudy's father, died in 2014. A witness (reportedly his son-in-law, David Whipple, who lived across the street from Smith in 1996), had seen Trudy in his car, and Smith threatened to kill him if the witness told the police about this. Smith was seen alone later on the day of Trudy's disappearance, but Trudy was never seen again. He had his car scrapped within a week of Trudy's disappearance, and he acted "despondent" whenever her name was mentioned.

Trudy's father theorizes that Smith and Whipple took Trudy out on a boat on the Mississippi River and something unexpected happened, perhaps an accident, that lead to the child's death. Trudy was friends with one of Whipple's children and frequently accompanied their family on the boat. On the day of her disappearance, she had asked her father for permission to go swimming and he told her no; however, it's possible she went anyway. Whipple has refused to cooperate with investigators in Trudy's disappearance.

A third person of interest, Jamison A. "Jamie" Fisher, was named Trudy's case in 2020. He was a lifelong friend of the Smith family. Photos of Fisher, Whipple and Smith are posted with this case summary. Smith died in 2014. Whipple has refused to cooperate with investigators in Trudy's disappearance.

Police are appealing to anyone who might have seen any suspicious activity in the areas of Campbell's Island, Black Bird Island, Dynamite Island, or the boat launch at Empire Park in East Moline, Illinois on the day Trudy disappeared. Her case remains unsolved.
