Three Royal Netherlands Army soldiers were wounded in a shooting outside an Indianapolis hotel early Saturday, authorities said.

The soldiers, members of the Dutch Commando Corps, were in Indiana as part of a training exercise, the Dutch Ministry of Defense said in a news release.

Officers responded to a Hampton Inn shortly before 4 a.m. and found three men with gunshot wounds, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

All three men were taken to a local hospital, with at least one of them in critical condition, authorities said.

"Preliminary information suggests a disturbance occurred between the victims and the suspect(s) which resulted in the shooting. Detectives do not believe this was a random act and that there is no immediate threat to the area," Indianapolis police said in a news release.

The Dutch soldiers had been training at the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center, a 1,000-acre complex southeast of Indianapolis that is being used for training by the Department of Defense "as well as other allies," the Indiana National Guard told CNN affiliate WISH in a statement.

Thanks for getting this started @imstilla.grandma.

According to the Indianapolis police, a local news station reports that two of the three commandos have been hospitalized in critical condition. According to the police, the trio may have been involved in a street fight before they were shot, but the defense has not released anything about this.

Local police are investigating the cause of the shooting. No one has been arrested yet.

Interesting detectives do not believe this was a random act. This happened in their free time, so the soldiers would have worn normal clothes.

The deceased soldier has been identified by police as Simmie Poetsema. A spokesman for the Royal Netherlands Army told the Indianapolis Starnewspaper on Monday that his family were at his bedside when he succumbed to his injuries.

"As I understand it there was a scuffle — a kerfuffle — at a bar and the Dutch guardsmen had returned back to their hotel," said Mayor Joe Hogsett.

"What they were doing outside I'm not altogether sure — but I'm told the alleged perpetrators did a drive-by shooting and ultimately three were victimised by that shooting."

Investigators said the soldiers had been training at the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center before visiting Indiana's state capital at the end of their duty day.

“We do many trainings of our servicemen in the United States, and we really don’t expect this to happen. So it’s very, very concerning for us,” Kajsa Ollongren said at a meeting of EU defence ministers in Prague on Tuesday.

Ollongren declined to comment on the shooting while investigations continue. She said there was “good contact” between Dutch military police and authorities in Indianapolis.

“We have read things in the media, we have heard what the mayor said but we feel it’s very important to have a real thorough investigation. So we’re waiting for that until we comment on what actually happened,” she said.

Ollongren said the US defence secretary, Lloyd Austin, had contacted her on Monday “to express his regrets and his condolences”.

I'm glad they've made an arrest. Who know's what set off the shooter. It seems that in many cases these days, all it takes is looking at someone the wrong way or bumping into them by accident or inadvertently cutting someone off while driving.

I have close family in Amsterdam. I just recently returned from there. What a joy to be able to walk all around a city and feel totally safe, day or night (though I wasn't out much after 10 pm). One thing that could possibly have happened is that the Dutch are very direct - kind and friendly, but very direct. If you're at their home and it's getting to be dinner time, they won't give subtle hints like looking at their watch, they'll just say, "Go home. We're going to eat now." If you're in a group that's trying to solve a problem and someone puts forth a bad idea, we might say, "Hmmm...that's interesting," whereas the Dutch are more likely to say, "That's a terrible idea" or "That won't work."

22-year-old is suspected of murder of Dutch commando

INDIANAPOLIS - Indianapolis police arrested a 22-year-old suspect on Monday in connection with Saturday's shooting that killed a Dutch commando and injured two others. Shamar Duncan is suspected of murder, police said. The prosecutor has yet to decide whether Duncan will be officially charged.
The shooting happened in the military's free time. There was allegedly a brawl in a bar prior to the shooting. The mayor of the American city has announced this, local media WRTV and IndyStar reported earlier this week.
According to Mayor Joe Hogsett, the police have "a good idea" of what happened. “As I understand it, there was an argument in a bar, after which the Dutch soldiers went back to their hotel. I don't know exactly what they were doing outside together, but I was told there was a drive-by shooting and three people were killed as a result."

Police: Friend of accused recounted Dutch soldier's killing

"...Investigators used statements from the surviving soldiers, witnesses, video from a bystander and surveillance video to identify Duncan as the shooting suspect, according to the affidavit.

"A unnamed witness told police that Duncan and his two friends were “looking for trouble”...Duncan's group then picked a fight with the soldiers, the witness said.

"The soldiers, who were in Indianapolis on a night off from training at a military camp in southern Indiana, were walking back to their hotel from a club downtown when Duncan and his friends bumped into them as they walked past, soldiers told investigators. Poetsema and others in the group of soldiers were trying to diffuse the situation, but it eventually turned into a fight that lasted somewhere between 30 seconds and a few minutes, witnesses told police...."

___________
Senseless. Worse than I thought. It was bad enough thinking one of the soldiers had inadvertently bumped into the suspect. But the suspect and friends were apparently looking for trouble, bumped the soldiers, and the suspect is upset when the soldiers knock him down.

Edited to add: Doesn't it seem odd that there's no information on the suspect?

How an Indianapolis street fight turned into an international incident

...The other witness told police he had seen the group earlier in the night. In his telling, the group consisted of four men.

“He said he observed four black males trying to fight a Hispanic group about an hour before the video incident,” court documents state.

A different witness said he watched the altercation from across the street, also describing Duncan’s group as the instigators....

I was wondering, are there any WS'ers that are from Indy or familiar with it. I wondered what this area is like.
