Munster, Ind. - Police in northwest Indiana have issued a missing persons alert for a 70-year-old doctor from Munster, Ind. who has not been seen or heard from since Monday.

Grew up in Highland and Munster - the two towns are side-by-side and very densely populated suburbs of Hammond and Gary. The only secluded spaces to speak of are the towns' parks, which are surrounded by neighborhoods, and the area surrounding the Cady-Marsh Ditch ( a fairly nasty smelling stream that runs along the southern border of both towns and separates them from Hammond) .

Mystery surrounds Indiana doctor's disappearance

" Up until recently, she lived alone at her home in Munster. One of her three adult sons had moved back from California and was also living here.

Dr. Paul’s office was Highland.

She was last seen Monday night by her office staff. There’s been no cell phone or credit card activity since."

Police say missing Munster doctor could have faced foul play

"The 70-year-old doctor was last seen about 5 p.m. March 21 making a night deposit at First Financial Bank, 2611 Highway Ave., Highland, according to Munster Police Detective Michael Janiga. He confirmed Mehta-Paul is seen on bank video and was driving her gold 2001 Toyota Rav4, which is now missing.

Mehta-Paul lived alone; however, a son had recently been staying with her at the Munster house. The son’s 1997 Acura is at the residence as is missing a California license plate, Scheckel said.

Scheckel said detectives are working to get in touch with the son. Scheckel also said Mehta-Paul’s SUV could either have a California or Indiana license plate."

So, a 70 yr old woman, a still working doctor, goes missing on a Mon., after making a bank deposit.
Her car is missing.
An adult son recently moved back in with her.
From the news article, police have not spoken with him yet.
And it has been 6 days since she went missing.

There could have been a car accident.
Did she have a good relationship with her son?
Did she have any financial troubles?

I wonder what the time of her last cell phone conversation was.

Investigators did check the eye doctor's residence shortly after her disappearance, only finding the son's 1997 Acura still in the driveway but missing a California license plate.

Detectives are working to get in touch with the son and add that the doctor's SUV could have Indiana license plate DW2031, or California license plate 6LHZS319.

It sounds to me as if the son is also missing, or can't be located by LE, and one of his car's plates could possibly be on her vehicle. I'm curious if the missing plate is from the rear of his vehicle where the registration tags would be - which would be a more likely indication it had been put on another car. And of course, I also am curious not only what time her last cell phone conversation was, but where the phone last pinged from. MOO

For what it's worth, there are too many characters in that license plate. :waitasec: CA has a number followed by three letters and three numbers.

The local paper is still laying in Mehta-Paul's front lawn as the Munster Police Department continues its search for Dr. Mehta-Paul.

The disappearance has her neighbors in shock.

"She's a lovely lady but I hope everything is well with her," said neighbor Dale Mendoza.

Mendoza and his mother Pauline Mendoza have lived in the same community as Mehta-Paul for 30 years.

Police said Tuesday, however, they had located a family member for whom they'd been searching.

Munster investigators say Dr. Paul lived alone until one of her sons moved from California recently. He briefly disappeared this week, but police say all three of the doctor's other children are cooperating.

..and..

"We were looking for the one son. We were unable to locate him, but as of this morning, we did find him. He is in California, and our investigators did talk to him. I can't tell you the details of the conversation, but they did locate him," said Munster Police Department Sgt. Steven Kovacik.

well.... this is strange!

he is back in california but left his car there sans plate?

Munster Police Sgt. Steven Kovacik said today that none of the woman's vehicles are missing.

Is her car missing or not? All other news reports say her car is still missing.

That seems to be the same article I used to open the thread, which was one of the first reports on the doctor being missing. However, later reports from yesterday indicated the license plate missing from his Acura and it possibly being on her SUV, which leads me to believe her SUV is unaccounted for. MOO

I agree, something doesn't make sense. I'd still like to know which license plate (front or rear?) is missing. If it is from the front, it doesn't seem like a big deal, as he may never have put it on the car. If it is from the rear, it would have the registration tags on it, which would lead to the next question, who removed it? :waitasec: MOO
