A suitcase containing human remains has been found in southeast Indianapolis.

At around 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police responded to a call about the remains at the 2500 block of Villa Avenue. Homicide investigators are looking further into the situation.

According to IMPD officer Genae Cook, several people were walking along Bean Creek and came across a suitcase. One of the individuals opened the suitcase to find human remains, she said.

Cook confirmed that the remains do not belong to a baby, but did not have further age, gender or race details.

Authorities told local news outlets they were initially unsure how long the suitcase had been in the creek.

Genae Cook from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department told CBS4: “Maybe someone was sick, maybe there was some other outside influence that made this person die. But never put any remains inside of a suitcase. It’s just a terrible way to treat that [person].”

Police will not release the victim’s identity until their next of kin has been informed, according to CBS4. They asked members of the public with any information pertaining to the incident to call IMPD Homicide Office at 317-327-3475 or Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.

Who has been reported missing from that area or upstream from that area?

A large number of teens are missing from Indianapolis, unfortunately. :( I bumped most of the Indianapolis missing threads over in the recent missing forum. Most of the cases have very little info to go on to even tell where in the city they were last seen.

Both of these are missing from the same zip code (I think).

The remains were not of a baby, but police declined to reveal any additional details about the race, gender or approximate age of the victim.

While police were short on those basic details, they said Monday's find does not appear to have any connections with the local case of Najah Ferrell — a missing mother of five, according to WTHR, an Indianapolis NBC affiliate.

Police and the Marion County coroner are still seeking to identify the remains and determine the cause of death.

Body discovered inside suitcase in Indianapolis, sparking investigation

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) -- The human remains found Monday in a suitcase near a creek have been identified as an Indianapolis man reported missing in March.

Larry Terry, 56, was reported missing to IMPD on March 12 by his aunt, who said he was last seen at his home in the 3000 block of English Avenue. She also told police he was diabetic and possibly did not have his medication. She also said his roommate was asleep when he left.

People who were fishing in a creek along the 2500 block of Villa Avenue on Monday afternoon found a suitcase. When they opened it, they discovered Terry's remains inside and contacted police, IMPD Officer Genae Cook said Monday. That area is about 2.5 miles away from where Terry was last seen.

Terry's death on Tuesday remained under investigation.

BBM. I have a feeling they need to talk to the roommate again. MOO.

Thomas Martin misses his friend of more than ten years who he started renting a room to several months ago. It was his way of helping Larry Terry get back on his feet. The 56-year-old is one IMPD's unsolved homicides.

"Like, what kind of person can do something like that," said Thomas Martin.

He woke up Monday morning with a business card from a detective from IMPD's Homicide Unit. Martin is sure the detective wants to chat with him about the last time he saw his longtime friend and roommate alive.

Martin is just concerned that he has so limited information, but hopes there is someone out there than can help the case.

"He said he was going to this place where he was buying this RV from at New York and Sherman and he asked me to watch his dogs for a couple of days, feed them, give them water and take them out and I said I would," Martin said.
