Are there names to go with the LE, FBI - and the official looking person? I'd like to put that in my notes. TIA! If you don't mind... ??
I found this but still can't find the name of the third person.
Judge gives Justin Miller maximum sentence for murder of Mercedes Lain
FBI agent Tim Freel testified that Miller and his girlfriend were fighting and at a couple points throughout the night, Miller’s girlfriend went into Miller’s sleeping area to argue, waking up Mercedes.

@Niner
Lain's plea was accepted by the judge and his sentencing hearing is set for Feb 18 @ 10am. He pleaded guilty to Count 1 Neglect; the state did not file the Habitual charge.

Coburn weeped through his hearing and hers. She signed a plea deal, too and it's almost the same as his. The submission of the deal and her sentencing will be done on Feb 25 @ 10 am.

@Niner
Judge Sarber sentenced Lain to the max of 2 & 1/2 years. The guilty plea was a mitigating factor but was lessened because it was part of the agreement to drop the habitual offender charge. He also took into consideration the steps Lain took to get rehab in jail and to line it up once he gets out.

Coburn did not come to his sentencing.

Thanks!

So this case is done, eh?

RIP Mercedes...

I think so.

She admitted to using meth for 12 years, only being off of it for a little over 8 months before Mercedes was born. She said they lived at the motel for one year and she consumed drugs during that time. She also knew Miller was taking drugs that day = synthetic weed.

It seemed to me that the judge and prosecutor came down harder on her than they did on Lain. Do we hold mothers to a higher standard of care for the children than we do the fathers?

The judge gave her several chances to say something to him. She told him about the steps toward rehab she was taking while incarcerated and her plans to continue when she got out... and all the usual stuff about changing, never wanting to go back to prison. She told probation that she felt she shouldn't even be there. That tripped the judge a bit.

She cried from beginning to end but IMO it was all for herself.

Of course she is crying for herself... I wish she can be "fixed" and not have any more children!! :(

Fix her and Lain!

Well, she admitted to having a drug addiction and that would have been a good time to step up and take responsibility for her part in the baby's death. She could have told the judge how much she regretted her bad decisions, how much she missed Mercedes ... there was just so much she could have said and didn't.

Of course, Lain could have done the same thing and didn't. He did say he took grief counseling but I'm suspicious of his motive.
