Amnesty urges Israel's 'appalling' Gaza evacuation order be rescinded immediately

Amnesty International said Israel’s order for Palestinian civilians to leave the northern Gaza Strip within 24 hours “cannot be considered an effective warning” and called for it to be rescinded immediately.

The order is an “an impossible demand” that “may amount to forced displacement of the civilian population, a violation of international humanitarian law”, the rights group said in a statement on Friday.

Regardless of timeframe, Israel cannot treat northern Gaza as an open-fire zone based on having issued this order.
Israeli forces must “take all feasible precautions” to minimise harm to civilians wherever they are in Gaza, it said.

Agnès Callamard, Amnesty’s secretary general, said:

With this order, Israeli forces are setting in motion the mass forced displacement of more than 1.1 million people from Gaza city and the entire northern part of the Gaza Strip. It has sowed panic among the population and left thousands of internally displaced Palestinians now sleeping on the streets, not knowing where to flee to or where they can find safety amid a relentless bombing campaign by Israel and merciless collective punishment measures.
She urged Israel’s allies to call for international humanitarian law to be respected and civilians to be protected.

Gaza must not be used as political pawns and their lives cannot be devalued. The international community must also refrain from further legitimizing Israel’s 16-year long illegal blockade and immediately halt the transfer of arms that could be used to commit unlawful attacks.

ICRC: Hamas attack does not justify 'limitless destruction' of Gaza

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has called for the immediate release of hostages taken by Hamas during the attacks on Israellast weekend, but said those attacks “cannot in turn justify the limitless destruction of Gaza”.

In a statement on Friday, the ICRC said “nothing can justify the horrific attacks Israel suffered”.

Israel’s army for 1.1million residents of northern Gaza to evacuate within 24 hours, along with the blockade of Gaza denying them food, water, and electricity “are not compatible with international humanitarian law”, the ICRC said.

Gazans had “nowhere safe to go” and it was “impossible” for them to know which areas “will next face attack”, it said.

I feel for Israel. They seem to be the only country on earth who gets blamed for responding as any other country would. They really do try to limit the civilian casualties but they can only do so much.

The State Dept has had more than 20,000 US citizens reach out since October 7th. Charter & commercial flights are being made available from Israel. A Sr. State Dept official says there are an estimated 500-600 US citizens in Gaza. It is unclear how they'd leave at this point.

NEWS: 3 sources with knowledge tell me the US has urged Israel to delay its ground operation in Gaza until safe passage for Palestinians can be secured – this is in line with previous messaging from the US, urging Israel to abide by the laws of armed conflict.

ALSO: I'm told the first charter flight has already departed the region – approximately 100 people evacuated. US officials believe interest in leaving may increase in the coming days - right now, there is initial planning for a cruise ship option

Rebel? Did you see the footage of celebrations in Gaza City? Women handing out cakes and candy in celebration? Dancing on the dead bodies of soldiers? Raping and dragging a young girl? It wasn’t JUST militants. It was women. Children. They were celebrating and dancing, like at a wedding.

Its one thing to be afraid for your life and do as Hamas says. Its a whole other story to celebrate in the streets.
The latest 2021 poll shows that 53% of adult Palestinins support Hamas - a recognized terrorist organization. Wonder why those other states aren't rushig to allow at least the women and children passage through the border.

That’s not even the scary part. Polling shows that an overwhelming majority support attacks against civilians.

That's just not feasible. Likely there are patients in surgeries that will not be finished in two hours. And critically ill people perhaps on ventilators that cannot be moved.

And where will they go? Out in a field without electricity or water?

I can't find this hospital on Google maps. Does anyone know where this is in Gaza?

2021 poll in the AP link

This is more recent

'According to the latest Washington Institute polling, conducted in July 2023, Hamas’s decision to break the ceasefire was not a popular move.'

'Overall, 57% of Gazans express at least a somewhat positive opinion of Hamas—along with similar percentages of Palestinians in the West Bank (52%) and East Jerusalem (64%)—though this is fewer than those who support Fatah (64%).'

Médecins Sans Frontières update

'Clarification: Israeli forces have now postponed the demand to evacuate Al Awda Hospital in the Gaza Strip until 6am. The evacuation of patients remains complicated.'
