White House spokesperson John Kirby has told reporters on Air Force One that the “decision not to go to Jordan was mutual”, Reuters reports.

Following a blast at a Gaza hospital where hundreds of people were sheltering from Israeli air strikes, and patients were being treated, Jordan’s foreign minister canceled a regional summit scheduled for Wednesday in Amman, where Biden was to meet with Jordan’s King Abdullah II, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi.

Israeli and Palestinian authorities have each blamed each other for the hospital attack.

A short while after Jordan’s announcement, the White House announced that Biden would not visit Amman.

Biden is currently en route to Tel Aviv.

Former Israeli ambassador to the U.S. on CNN right now. Says that a terrorist rocket alone could absolutely cause the type of destruction that occurred at that hospital. He says that a rocket took down an entire building next door to where he lives. He adds that this could have been exacerbated by any weapons stored in and around the hospital.

Do you remember a year ago when the missile struck in Poland?
For a good while afterwards people were saying it had to be a Russian missile attack direct on Poland

It later turned out to be an errant Ukrainian missile?

UN Human Rights chief says deaths from Gaza hospital blast are "unacceptable"

From CNN’s Richard Roth

UN Human Rights chief Volker Tur said the Gaza hospital blast that left at least hundreds of people dead was "unacceptable," according to a statement released on Tuesday from the Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner.

Hospitals are sacrosanct and the killings and violence must stop, Turk said. He added those responsible for the hospital blast must be held accountable.

Turk urged all states with influence to do everything in their power to stop the current situation.

“Civilians must be protected, and humanitarian aid must be allowed to reach those in need as a matter of urgency. Those found responsible must be held to account,” he said.

Emphasis mine.
I have no problem with that.
A step in the right direction.

<modsnip: There is nothing to suggest or support UN is biased in favour of Iran or Hamas over Israel>

Canadian officials: International negotiators seem to be closer to securing humanitarian corridor out of Gaza

From CNN’s Paula Newton in Ottawa

Canadian officials say that while the Rafah crossing remains extremely dangerous, they are encouraged that they and international negotiators seem to be getting closer to establishing a humanitarian corridor out of Gaza and into Egypt.

“We know how dangerous the situation is inside Gaza, we know that the crossing point has also been damaged due to attacks and bombing, so creating an exit point that is relatively safe for people needs to negotiated and guarantees have to be put in place and that’s what the current diplomatic negotiations are all about,” Alexandre Lévêque, an assistant deputy minister with Global Affairs Canada said Tuesday. “We are somewhat encouraged by the fact that we seem to be getting a little bit closer to this but of course it’s not yet a done deal.”

Lévêque declined to provide any details of the negotiations but said they involved Egypt, the United Nation, the US and other nations.

Canadian officials cautioned that the window to leave will likely be short and they confirmed that they are in touch with about 370 Canadians or "Canadian entitled" people needing to leave Gaza.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reacted to the hospital blast in Gaza, again calling on all parties to respect international law.

“The news coming out of Gaza is horrific and absolutely unacceptable,” Trudeau told reporters, shortly after he received news of the hospital bombing Tuesday.

“International humanitarian and international law needs to be respected in this and in all cases,” he added. “There are rules around wars and it's not acceptable.”

The US and Israel continue efforts to locate impacted Americans in the Middle East, FBI director says

US and Israeli officials continue to work together to "locate and identify all Americans who've been impacted in the region including those who remain unaccounted for," FBI Director Christopher Wray told reporters Tuesday.

He said the FBI continues to partner with state and local law enforcement agencies to mitigate all threats they have identified within the US.

Asked what the FBI has been able to discern about the preparation and planning of Hamas' attack in Israel, Wray said "those are absolutely topics that we've been discussing as partners in our private meetings."

He didn't elaborate further.

Over the weekend, Wray told reporters the FBI has seen an increase in reported threats in the US amid the Israel-Hamas war. Most threats have been deemed not credible by the agency, a senior FBI official said during the call, but Jewish and Muslim institutions have been targeted.

31 Americans killed in Hamas attack on Israel

The number of Americans killed from the Hamas attack on Israel now stands at 31, White House spokesperson John Kirby said on Tuesday.

Kirby said the United States would continue to speak to Israel about the need to protect innocent civilian life.

President Joe Biden is on his way to Israel to show US support in the aftermath of the Hamas attack.

Jonathan Conricus

@jconricus

Apalled by the double standards in reporting: breaking coverage on @BBCWorld automatically blames Israel for an explosion at a Gaza hospital, based solely on what terrorist Hamas claims!
And when we investigate and refute the claims, evidence must be delivered. I have no issue with being held accountable, but only wish our enemies are held to the same scrutiny. Watch my interview.

Protests outside US embassy in Beirut

Protesters enraged by the Gaza hospital blast have gathered outside the US embassy in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, and have set a large fire.

Pictures on social media show that protesters have raised a Palestinian flag on the walls of the US compound in Aukar, a northern suburb of Beirut.

Tear gas has been fired at the crowd in order to get them to disperse, Reuters reported.

Meanwhile, a small crowd has also gathered outside the French embassy and are reportedly throwing rocks at the building.

Earlier, Hezbollah, the militant group that controls southern Lebanon and fought a war with Israel in 2006, released a statement condemning the deaths of civilians at the Al Ahli hospital.

It also called for "a day of unprecedented anger" to be held on Wednesday.

Protesters clash with Lebanese security forces on outside the US embassy during a demonstration in solidarity with the people of Gaza

Bolding mine.
Those in the embassy might want to consider leaving for their own safety, if this gets worse ?

People are losing control of themselves -- over what might have been a rocket from Iran's Revolutionary guard, or a failed Hamas rocket.
Instead of attacking, committing arson, and putting up the Palestinian flag ; the protesters in Lebanon could instead start buying and packaging up food, water, and medical supplies and mail it to Gaza.
Something helpful and constructive ?

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz was evacuated from his plane shortly before takeoff in Israel due to an air raid alert late Tuesday night, a Reuters correspondent traveling with the chancellor reported.

Video recorded by Reuters shows Scholz and his staff quickly entering a vehicle on the tarmac of Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv after disembarking the plane.

Scholz arrived in Israel on Tuesday and met with Israeli President Isaac Herzog and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to express Germany’s solidarity with Israel. Scholz is set to travel to Egypt to meet with President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on Wednesday.

CNN has reached out to the Chancellor's office for comment.

Treasury to launch new sanctions against Hamas this week:

The big picture: Hamas has been a designated terrorist organization in the U.S., the EU and other Western countries for several decades.
  • While Hamas leaders don't have assets in the U.S., the sanctions will increase pressure on some of the countries that host them, like Qatar.
  • The Treasury Department is working closely with the private sector to enforce existing sanctions and execute new ones.
  • This week's set of sanctions is likely the first batch in several rounds to come, according to a U.S. official.

Islamic Jihad says IDF accusation over hospital blast is 'lies'

AFP: Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad on Wednesday described as “lies” the Israel army’s accusations that it was responsible for a strike on a Gaza hospital that left hundreds dead.

At least 200 people were killed in an air strike on a hospital compound that sheltered the wounded and displaced from Israeli bombing, local health officials said Tuesday, prompting global condemnation and fury.

The Hamas-run health ministry claimed that Israel was behind the attack on the Ahil Arab hospital in central Gaza but Israel’s military blamed a malfunctioning rocket fired by Islamic Jihad.

“The Zionist enemy is trying hard to evade its responsibility for the brutal massacre he committed by bombing the Baptist Arab National Hospital in Gaza through his usual fabrication of lies, and through pointing the finger of blame at the Islamic Jihad movement in Palestine,” it said in a statement Wednesday.

“We therefore affirm that the accusations put forward by the enemy are false and baseless,” it added.

According to the statement, the hospital had been ordered to evacuate by Israel under threat of bombardment, and it was a bomb dropped by an Israeli army plane that caused the tragedy.

It said the hospital had “received public notice made global of evacuation under threat of bombing”.

The Israeli army, for its part, said the hospital was hit by a rocket misfired by Islamic Jihad Palestinian militants.

Spokesman Daniel Hagari told a press briefing that at the time of the strike, the Israeli army was not conducting air operations near the hospital and the rockets that hit the building did not match theirs.

He added that the army would also provide conversations in Arabic that indicate the strike was done by Islamic Jihad.

Here's what's been happening in the last few hours

It's now almost 04:00 in Gaza and Israel.
If you're just joining us, here's what's been happening in the last few hours:
  • The Hamas-led authorities in Gaza say 500 people died in the explosion at the Al Ahli hospital. Hamas blamed Israel, which in turn blamed Palestinian militants
  • Hamas said an Israeli air strike on the hospital was to blame, describing it as a “war crime”, while Israel denied its military was involved and said the explosion was inadvertently caused by a rocket fired by Palestinian Islamic Jihad
  • Islamic Jihad, the second biggest militant group in the Gaza Strip, has denied responsibility
  • International leaders have released statements condemning the loss of life at the hospital
  • The leaders of Jordan, Egypt and the Palestinian Authority have cancelled their planned summit with US President Joe Biden on Wednesday
  • Biden is currently travelling to Israel. He was due to meet Israeli leaders on Wednesday before travelling to Amman, but will now remain in Israel
  • Hamas and Hezbollah, the militant group that controls southern Lebanon, have both said that the US shares the blame with Israel for the hospital strike
  • A large group of protesters held an overnight rally outside the US embassy in Beirut, where they started fire and hung Palestinian flags from the walls of the compound

White House must punish Iran over Hamas attacks, lawmakers say

U.S. officials have not presented evidence that Tehran played a direct role in the massacre in Israel, but a bipartisan group is demanding action

October 17, 2023 at 5:00 a.m. EDT
by Jeff Stein and Jacob Bogage

President Biden faces growing pressure from lawmakers in both parties to punish Iran after Hamas’s massacre this month, as the administration tries to support Israel without expanding an already gruesome conflict in the Middle East.

On Monday night, Reps. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.) and Don Bacon (R-Neb.) sent a letter to the White House, signed by more than 110 lawmakers, demanding more aggressive financial sanctions on Iran, pointing to ties between Tehran and the militants who carried out the bloody attack on Israel. Backed by more than 60 House Democrats, the letter said the administration should block Iranian oil sales to other countries such as China, aiming to dry up one of the regime’s key sources of funding.”

Biden's itinerary in Israel

National Security Council spokesman John Kirby gave an update about President Biden's planned itinerary upon landing in Tel Aviv on Wednesday morning.

  • First, Biden meets with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu in "a very small restricted bilateral meeting"
  • He will then meet with the Israeli war cabinet
  • Next, Biden "will have a chance to meet with some of the Israeli first responders who are bravely putting themselves in harm's way in response to these Hamas attacks"
  • Followed by meeting with families who have lost loved ones or whose loved ones are held hostage
  • Biden will make public remarks followed by a short meeting with Israeli President Herzog
Biden "will be asking tough questions", said Kirby. "He'll be asking them as a friend, as a true friend of Israel, but he will be asking some questions of them."

Biden's planned visit to Amman, Jordan to meet with Arab leaders was cancelled after a hospital blast killed hundreds in Gaza City.

"The president intends to speak with both President Mahmoud Abbas and President Sisi on the flight home," Kirby says.
