"The fate of the war will be decided in the narrow alleys of northern Gaza, where - according to Israeli intelligence - entire districts have been turned into fortresses with fortified points of resistance and connected by tunnels.

Moreover, the area is probably mined, and the history of this type of conflicts shows that entire buildings are sometimes turned into giant traps packed with explosives.

It is highly probable that thousands of armed defenders from Hamas, Islamic Jihad and other organizations are waiting there for the attackers, whose number is estimated at 40,000 to even 70,000.

The Palestinians are equipped not only with light and sniper weapons, but also with Kornet guided anti-tank missiles. The Israelis recently discovered that Hamas received state-of-the-art Iranian missiles produced specifically to destroy Cahal vehicles.

The fights will be long and hard

Realizing the danger, the Israelis are trying to prepare the battlefield in advance as much as possible from the air.

Their way of conducting war involves pushing and surrounding the enemy by infantry and tanks in a relatively small, specific area, the so-called kill box and then destroy it using aviation and artillery.

In this case, it will be Gaza City and the towns north and east of it.
For this reason, the Israelis are trying to convince the civilian population to leave the northern part of the Gaza Strip.

This would deprive Hamas of human shields, whose death will cause outrage around the world and increase pressure on the government in Jerusalem.

Looking at the previous fighting in Gaza, it can be expected that in the first phase of the land campaign, the Israelis will occupy open areas in the north and east of the enclave and will want to break into the Mediterranean Sea in one or two places, dividing the Palestinian territory into two or three parts.

Only then will they decide to attack the fortified city districts weakened by air raids.

This approach means long, heavy fighting, great losses on both sides, and, above all, enormous suffering of over 2.2 million civilians who will not be able to leave the combat zone or will be condemned to many months of vegetation and dependence on humanitarian aid in the south of the Gaza Strip."

The forgotten Israeli hostages kept by Hamas in Gaza for years

The anguish over some 200 people kidnapped by Hamas in its brutal attack on Israel is in the spotlight - but Hamas has been holding at least two Israelis for years.
Very little has been heard about Ethiopian-Israeli Avera Mengistu and Bedouin Arab Israeli Hisham al-Sayed, seized in 2014 and 2015 respectively.

The relatives of two dead Israeli soldiers are also tormented by the fact that Hamas has been holding their remains in Gaza since 2014. Hadar Goldin and Oron Shaul were killed during a war between Israel and Hamas that year.

"Get to the border NOW!

US Embassy tells foreign nationals to get to the Rafah crossing on Gaza-Egypt border to leave as Israeli tanks are lined up and ready to plough into besieged Palestinian enclave after Hamas attacks.

'It is your last hope'."

BBC to stop referring to Hamas as militants, but won't refer to them as terrorists

Several British publications have questioned whether the move was truly a result of a change of heart or if it was driven by the review of BBC funding which is coming up in the next week.

Cairo summit - updates Israel-Hamas war live: aid trucks enter Gaza as Rafah crossing on border with Egypt opens

more comments from participants - Greece, Italy, France

Italy
Giorgia Meloni, prime minister of Italy, says “innocent civilians have left their homes and from our point of view we must respond.”
“We would like to be the starting dialogue point between Mediterranean countries and the European Union.”
It is very important for all leaders present that what is happening in Gaza is “a conflict for civilisation”.
A peaceful dialogue is very important, she says, including the issue of terrorism, which she says has weakened many states, especially Muslim nations.
Hamas “chose terrorism instead of dialogue,” she says. “No-one can children and women.”

Greece
“There are innocent victims on both sides,” says Greek prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. “Collective punishment” must be prohibited, he adds.
“Hamas is a terrorist organisation,” he says, adding that Hamas is “not the Palestinian people.”

France
Israel has the right to defend itself in order for this not to replicate again. But she added that the response must be “just” and “consistent with international law”.She said that Hamas “does not represent the Palestinian cause”, adding:
These civilians are not responsible for the act of the group.
We reject the act of Hamas and call on all other international parties to condemn the acts of Hamas.
She said a consensus must be reached on how to deliver aid to Palestine in a sustainable manner. Humanitarian relief should “target the most vulnerable sectors”, and there must be a ceasefire, with those who wish to exit the Gaza strip able to do so “without any impediment”.

Many reporters have said that the delay in Israel's next phase is all down to allied pressure - to buy time to get more hostages out etc

So it's interesting to get an alternative perspective on benefits of delay from Philip Ingram :

Two weeks following Hamas's attack would be the "earliest stage" at which Israel could launch an offensive, Ingram says, as it takes a "long time" to build up.

As well as this, Israel will be attacking into an area that Hamas has had many years to prepare.

Ingram believes the offensive will come "probably in the next few days", with Israel having to weigh up the potential losses of going in too early versus giving Hamas extra time to prepare.

Re hostage negotiations and involvement of Qatar ( Ali Bunkall, reporter for ME, Sky)

Whilst some might question why Qatar, a western ally, allows Hamas to remain there, they would argue this is an example of how it is better to have Hamas close-by rather than sent into exile to an unfriendly state.

Were Qatar to close the office and deport Hamas, they would likely go to Tehran and maybe onto Moscow. Lines of communication, so vital at a time like this, would be lost.

Undoubtedly, securing the release of hostages via diplomatic channels is preferable to a military-led rescue operation.

upsetting details at link which reiterates the ages and infirmities of many of those taken hostage

The BBC’s Spanish-language service released a program claiming that “Jewish wealth and influence” in the United States is the reason behind the United States’ ongoing support for Israel, according to a translation produced by Jewish News on October 20.

BBC getting it from both sides, naturally

'Palestinian American activists say television networks also have censored or cancelled interviews. NPR and the BBC pulled advertising for a widely praised new book about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict after a campaign of “listener complaints”

Where is NK in all this, has KJU commented, (still overloaded, too overloaded to look, experiencing “system error”).

Tia.

He and putin have been busy.

Last week, the United States said North Korea had transferred munitions to Russia to boost its fighting capabilities in Ukraine in violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions that ban any weapons trading involving North Korea.

IDF claim that Greta Thunberg is a supporter of terrorism which seems, erm....libellous at the very least .

It's ridiculous. You don't have to be a supporter of terrorism to agree with what Greta says. I think she's right. It doesn't mean you support Hamas at all. But of course the IDF wouldn't agree with her.

.....
The United Nations said the 20-truck convoy included life-saving supplies that would be received by the Palestinian Red Crescent. Palestinian group Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, said the delivery included medicine and limited amounts of food.
"Hamas said the delivery included..."?

NYT rehires Hitler-praising Soliman Hijjy to cover Israel-Hamas war

A New York Times reporter who came under fire last year for a praising Adolf Hitler in multiple resurfaced Facebook posts was rehired by the Gray Lady to cover the Israel-Palestine war.

Palestinian filmmaker Soliman Hijjy hailed the Nazi leader as recently as 2018 in a post on Facebook, when he shared a photo of himself captioned that he was “in a state of harmony as Hitler was during the Holocaust,” per a translation from Arabic by pro-Israel media watchdog site HonestReporting.

She doesn’t have to be a supporter. She, also, shouldn’t share a Nazi era cartoon that is used in anti semitic propaganda. Big difference.

Greta Thunberg deletes pro-Palestinian post featuring antisemitic trope, claims she ‘was completely unaware’
