John Durkin, 21, of Rye Beach, N.H., was last seen by friends at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sloppy Sam’s bar in the Campo de Fiori section of Rome, his uncle, Tom Durkin, told the Bangor Daily News on Friday.

It appears his family is very well off which will be helpful here. They can afford to fly to Italy and aid in searching. I can't imagine having my child missing in another country.

He is a student at Bates in Lewiston… great school, not crazy expensive like many others. This likely isn't about his family's finances, rather US students in a foreign city for the semester… American Students and not 'The Durkins' is my guess.

Scary stuff. They are all over there for the semester. Imagine hearing this as parents and then having to fly overseas and weed through customs, a foreign land and language Looks like some on the FB page have ins with the police there in Italy. (I actually have messages out to relatives there to find out if they've heard about this student being missing.)

We have friends in common with the Durkins, and they seem to be a very nice family. They must be terrified at this point. Hopefully John will be found safe.

They have set up an event page on FB. Cant figure out how to link it on my iPad but you will see it if you search his name.

I can't find the FB set up for him. That's probably just me as I'm not on FB. John looks very Italian to me, which is a shame in this context as he won't have stuck out to people at all, in my opinion, unless they heard his accent.

I hope he's found safe.

What makes this situation particularly odd is that John left all his important belongings at the Spanish bar: phone, wallet, and passport. The friends that had last seen him said he was not notably drunk and was not a known drug user. I agree that it's not about the Durkins. I just posted they appear to have the means to be able to travel to Italy to aid in the search. Many families wouldn't have a passport, let alone $2K to jump on a last minute flight.

I hope his found safe.
